I have a KH24 (2004 model) with a steel frame. I’m thinking to upgrade to a new KH24 with an aluminium frame, but I’m a bit concerned about the durability of the aluminium frame with rough use. What is people’s experience with denting, retaining rigidity over time etc?
For info: I’m mostly an XC-type of rider so don’t do big drops and such. Sometimes I do a bit of trials with it. All in all the uni gets its fair share of bashing.
In my experience, this is a really, really strong frame. Maybe not the strongest, but you get your money worths for sure.
Mine has dented or anything, but most of the paint has been scratched off
It is still really rigid.
A couple people have broken off the seat tube, but only a couple, and for a frame that has been around for a while it is a very, very small percentage of them.
Why not just just reuse your 04 frame and just get a new wheelset? That’s what I intend to do with my 03. I don’t see much advantage in buying a new frame. They may be a little lighter, but they’re less unique.
Aluminum doesn’t lose stiffness over time; it tends to fail catastrophically rather than lose stiffness. I think it’s safe to say that a new KH frame is somewhat more likely to fail on you than your current steel frame, but that it’s still fairly unlikely to fail on you; there are reports of aluminum KH frame breakage, but they’re fairly rare and generally limited to people pushing the limits of what a MUni can do.
