The full image is much more shocking, to think a policeman was right next to the accident and could do nothing to stop it from happening.
Also to be noted is the helmet flying through the air. I see too many unicycle videos where kids are wearing their helmets unbuckled. Let this be a grim reminder to keep that buckle locked!

Sorry, not funny as 105 of us are gearing up for the world’s biggest unicycle race; 800kms on roads with cars. Remember the organizers have suggested wearing blinky taillights, especially in morning fog. And consider a helmet/glasses mirror. I’m bringing mine, and a backup. Of course none of that will have much effect against a drunk/sleepy driver, but at least I’ll feel safer.
That picture is going to give me nightmares. I wonder if that flying helmet belongs to the one rider who died?
Actually, i’m really sorry about making that joke. I’d say, hope for the best, plan for the worst. Keep your helmets strapped. Wear everything you can to get you noticed by others. Best of luck to those going to RTL, I wish i could come.

F###ing drunk driver should be charged and tried for MURDER! I can almost guarantee this loser has had DUI’s before. But they keep allowing them right back on the road! I feel so bad for the victims and their families.

There was one person killed and several were seriously hurt not to mention those traumatized by the event. The dude driving is being charged with murder.
I hope he gets convicted an gets life in prison! This is so freaking outrageous it makes my blood boil!

Wow. That driver’s has a very inconvenient mixture of stupidity and terrible luck.
Usually they don’t, but the hard part is keeping unlicensed drunks from driving anyway. I wonder if it would help to somehow un-register any vehicles they own until their license is restored? Probably not much.
Still trying to figure out what’s happening in the picture. Not in, but just before. Why are both cars on the wrong side of the road? I think the cop car may have swerved to avoid a head-on collision, probably not expecting the wayward car to go straight into the bikes. I’m guessing the cop car was in front of the peloton. The hard part is detecting an oncoming sleeping driver. You don’t know anything’s wrong until he’s right in your face. The fact that his car is pointed back toward the center of the road (and cloud of dust) suggests he hit the left shoulder and was trying to correct, possibly before/without realizing what was in front of him.
In any case, no sympathy for drunk-ass, sleepy-ass death machine operator. Whatever the maximum penalty is for his crimes, it should be just enough. If he ever gets out of jail, he should never be allowed behind the wheel again.
A few years ago, I was pulled over. I wasn’t speeding or anything (needless to say?). I had totally forgotten to renew my registration. I didn’t even remember getting the renewal thing in the mail. Apparently, the cop ran my plates as I passed. I thanked him for the ticket (!) and for not towing my unregistered car, because otherwise I would have ignorantly kept driving without renewing.
Anyway, the point is that unregistering the cars would help. It would make people more likely to get caught.
The picture is so graphic and disturbing – so painfully shocking to look at – that it should serve as a wakeup call to people who drink and drive. Also, as tragic as it was, I thought it was actually much worse.
He is stupid! People don’t think at all do they, yet were apparently one of the cleveredt on the planet. It’s people like that then screw that theory up, chew it, set it on fire and throw it out the window. He sould get charged for murder, Man slaughter, drunk driving, and banned from driving for ever.

Impound/confiscate the guys car(s) and restrict him from ever registering a car again. Of course by then it’s too late the damage is done and lives are destroyed. Do it the FIRST Dui offense, whether or not any accident occured. Nip it in the bud before something like this happens. A drunk driver saying they promise never to drive drunk again is like the wife beater who swears he’ll never hit his wife again. Yeah right!
