Drummers

Is anyone else a drummer here? I am, it’s awesome and super fun!!!

Can you play on a uni?
I don’t play any instrument. Except I can do this cool hand whistly thing, and I can play songs like that.

I’m pretty sure Mike Middleton is a drummer, but he doesn’t post much.

I’m a drummer!

I’m a drummer! I think Dave and Klaas are also drummers and percussionists. For the next UniNats in 2005 (Australian unicycling competition thingy) I want to do a group freestyle routine with Rockley and I playing djembes while riding around and doing tricks, etc. and the rest of the people doing tricks. I reckon that would be great fun to watch and to do.

What sort of drumming are you guys into? I like most stuff, but mainly funk and jazz-funk.

Andrew

I play percussion in folk music group Mista. And from early childhood on I have been drumming on tables, chairs, my legs, etc.

Klaas Bil

Me too (on the hand playing). I “perfected” it as a kid when i’d ride my bike no handed all over the place.

Are you guys referring to the “Loon-call” whistle with the hands, except playing songs with the same technique? Cause I do that too!

I’ve never heard it called that, but yes, that’s what I am referring to - where one’s hand are cupped together, and you blow between the thumbs.

A fairly rare skill as far as I can tell. My range is pretty near two octaves.

loon-call tunes

I just tried it for the first time, and it turns our that I can play tunes that way while riding or idling the uni.
(I figured I could do it riding, but was quite happily surprised that my idling was good enough!)

dale.nichols, James_Potter: If we ever happen to be together at some event, we should play something together! (Any chance you’re going to be at EJC 2004?)

(Sorry for hijacking the thread, drummers)

I drum… african hand drumming and polyrhythmic stuff mostly… I also play an anglo concertina accordion and harmonicas

Hey I play harmonica too. In fact I have been playing more lately than I ever have … due to my lay off of unicycling (broken leg, but I won’t belabor the fact). Anyways, as luck would have it, my main uni pal plays guitar - how cool is that? And so we have been jamm’in and having a really good time… not quite as much fun as riding one wheelers but almost!

Re: loon-call tunes

LOL, that might be quite a show!! What is EJC, and where is it?

Cool! I play accordion and harmonica as well. I’ve never tried concertina before though.

I too apologize. Please carry on!

EJC = European Juggling Convention
EJC 2004 is in France

Here, I found a website about it:

This guy is GOOD. Way Better than me… Listen to his songs, they’re insane.

What type of kits do all you guys have, I got a CB.

Awww… I feel stupid cause I can only play the piano and everyone (including me) hate the piano. I would seriously like to learn the bagpipes though…

I’ve got a Mapex ProM Series kit with Paiste 802’s. In addition I’ve bought myself a Paiste 8" Sound Formula Splash (which is really really cool and is signed by Danny Cary - the drummer for Tool…he uses the same splash too), and a Mapex double kick pedal which I’m currently trying to sell because I mainly play funk and other stuff that doesn’t require a double kick. Next on the list is a set of 8" hats. Since we’re on the topic of drumming, I like light, thin sticks. I currently use Ludwig 7A’s.

I like the piano…it’s not it’s fault everyone plays it (I’ve been playing the piano for about 10 years).

Andrew

super_evill: I don’t have a kit. :frowning: I spent my money on a new uni instead! Sometime in the future I’ll get a set… How do you like the CBs? If I remember correctly they are decently priced kits. How’s their quality?

Murde Mental: You shouldn’t feel stupid that you only know how to play the piano, and you shouldn’t hate it either. The piano is my favourite instrument to play!

dale.nichols: CB’s are pretty good, definatly not near the best but they’re a good begginer kit. I got mine used for aound 500 canadian, with a pair of sabian B8 high-hat and a 18"B8 crash/ride. I also have evans g1 heads on them. I tuned them so they sound good. If you don’t tune them very good they can sound like crap. If you want to buy a really really good begginer kit, get a pearl forum kit, there price pretty good and sound awesome. The pearl forum is probably the best starter kit you can get. Just save up your money and buy the best/inexpensive kit you can find.

Now my kit is still a 5 pce. I got 4 cymbals( 14"B8 hats, 18"B8 crash/ride, 18"B8pro chinese, and a wicked 16" Thin Hand Hammered Crash, all sabian), and a gibraltar double pedal. I like 5A’s or anything around there, I also use those AHEAD Lars Ulrich sticks.

I used to play the piano too, until about a year or two ago when I quit to play the drums.
