Neat idea. But I wonder how long it can stay free. That service has the potential to use a lot of bandwidth along with server CPU.
I’ve always used KeepVid or a bookmarklet from 1024.de. Both of those download the FLV file directly from YouTube so they avoid having to foot the bandwidth themselves. If I want the FLV in a different format I can convert it myself.
I’ve used that for a while, it’s real handy.
There’s an add-on like that for Firefox, it works like the one John posted, and you can watch the flv file in windows media player.
i just use the OOK addonn for Firefox. you just click an icon on your toolbar and it downloads the movie
If you have the one I do for youtube videos, you also have to convert from .FLV to a more suitable type. I guess YT saves its videos as .FLV.
FLV is the format used by Adobe Flash to play video.
You can play FLV files directly. There is no need to first convert them to something more suitable.
FLV Player is the easiest way. Just install it and FLV files will play.
It is also possible to get Windows Media Player to play FLV format videos. Longwinded manual instructions here. An easier way is to install PlayFLV. PlayFLV does everything in the Afterdawn guide for you automagically.
These solutions are Windows specific. I don’t do Mac.

Well the reason I had to convert what I downloaded is that I was planning on putting it on my flash drive to view on multiple different computers that probably just have WMP. .AVI is always better for that.

Yes, FLV is a bad format for keeping videos in. It is much better to keep your videos that you want to keep in a format that has a public standard, something like an MPEG standard or H.264. There is no guarantee that the compression codecs in FLV will continue to be available for free. It could be a dead end.
just type youtube video downloader in google and theres like 20 of those things that come up. Then download Total Video Converter to convert them to avi or divx.
