Don't change your animated avatar!

I just tried to switch to another animated avatar, and apparently the forum no longer allows new animated avatars. So if you like the one you have, keep it because if you try to change back to it after going to another avatar, you won’t be able to have it. Gilby, is there any possibility of changing this rule?

I was talking to Gilby about this earlier, he said that animated avatars are annoying, and therefore no longer allowed, but they might be allowed sometime in the future.

Even though this limits me to bieng able to use maybe 20 of the 200+ avatars I have, I don’t think I’ts too much of a big deal.

I can be annoying now. Until Gilby replaces my avatar with a picture of a pot-bellied pig or a run-over oppossum.

I quite like the animated avatars. They give me hours of harmless fun. Sometimes they are more interesting than the threads. Although I will never be clever enough to design my own animated avatar, I would happily man the barricades in support of the Pro-Avatar Revolutionary Party. (PARP)

Here, I made one for you:

You probably already had it in your repertoire.

Get a tiny freeware program called UnFREEz which is about 20k and doesn’t even install in your registry, it’s just an executable. Make a bunch of gif’s from drawings or photos that are the same dimension. Drag and drop them into the UnFREEz window. Select a time delay between frames in 0.01 sec increments. Push the “Make Animated GIF” button.

That’s what I always use! It rocks!

Unfprtunately UnFREEZ doesnt allow advanced animation options(IE: tweening, and altered framerates)

I just use Adobe ImageReadyCS2

Yea, but that is sort of the point of it…simple.

But I agree, for even a slightly advanced user, you would want something with more options.

I’m pretty sure you can just turn them off in your browser if they annoy you too much. Besides, we should be taking full advantage of all of these technolological acvancements! Who cares if they are stupid and pointless, they’re there, aren’t they?

/me sets Spudman’s account to show him 10 popup ads per page.

you can do that…?

Like he said: “we should be taking full advantage of all of these technolological acvancements!”

man thats just cruel…funny but cruel

That is why I make it a point to use every font on my computer. That’s why they’re there. Who cares that I don’t have the self-control not to abuse the powerful font technological advancements.

Hey!!
I(umph)… cant(umph)… SEEE!!!

All sorts of things on this forum are ripe with annoyance potential. Some are old things; some are new. Signatures full of garish colors and haphazardly mixed font sizes. That busy little garden of colorful icons that now blooms beneath our avatars, taking up almost as much space as the avatar itself in some cases. “Smilies” in arbitrary colors other than yellow. The existence of smilie images in general. All sorts of pretty, shiny objects which in the end are just visual ornamentation, doing nothing to enhance the actual informational content, and therefore inevitably annoying some and delighting others. Some of these things annoy me, but I don’t want any of them to go away. If we were to get rid of all of the things that annoy anyone, we’d end up with a pretty austere plain-black-text-on-white-screen-and-nothing-else forum format, which at least most of us probably don’t want.

Animated avatars can be annoying, sure. So can static avatars. So can the signatures, or the user titles, or image attachments. If someone doesn’t like to see avatars, there is a setting in their User CP which will turn them off. If someone just wants to allow avatars that conform to some quirk of his/her own personal taste, and banish all others that don’t, well… I can understand if a particular image is offensive or obscene or inherently unacceptable in some other way. But the mere fact that these avatars have movement in them, regardless of all of the other aspects of their content, is a pretty weak rationale for banning their use.

I like the animated avs myself. I enjoy making them. Finding the best way to fit what I’m making into a 20K 100x100 box is an intriguing exercise. I worked a LONG time on that South Park one. I enjoy seeing the ones that others here have created. I rarely see one that I think is annoying, and don’t remember ever seeing any that I felt needed to be blocked. If someone’s av actually does annoy me, like… well, heh, like Harper’s current psychedelic flashing radiation warning, I don’t demand that his avatar be banished. I just don’t sit there annoying myself by staring at it; I read the post and move on. This requires no effort on my part, and my life is none the worse for it. Coping with the trauma of seeing Harper’s av is a small price to pay for an extra dimension of creative personal expression, a small thing perhaps in the eyes of some, but something that I value. Take it away, and yet another tiny little bit of fun gets snuffed out of our increasingly grim world. Gilby puts a lot of his own time and effort into running this site and giving us this great clubhouse to hang out in, for which we all pay nothing in return. And it’s his site to manage as he pleases I suppose. But this av ban is a mistake, I think. I’m sad now. I hope the animated avs will return soon. I’ll miss them.

I want to ban comic sans here on the forum. :stuck_out_tongue:

and the pink smiley too

Definitely got me to rethink this… Oh well, I’m not in a good state to think about this, but we’ll see.
