Dollars/mile on a uni

Oh yes indeed, paul, roger and I took part in a 19 mile MTB sponsered ride early
this summer. The idea of doing it on a MUni helped lots with getting people to
sponser me, in the end I raised well over 100 ukp, not counting what the boys
raised. We had great response from other riders and the organisers and featured
heavily in the local press coverage.

As for how far, its up to you. With in a year of starting I could happily do 5
or 6 miles on road in a day, or push it to 9 and feel knackered the next day.
the important thing is to work up to it gradully, add an extra mile each weekend
or something like that. Now I am up to 30 miles aday on road comftably and the
same off road with more effert.

If you are going to take part in a big bike event I would recomnd going with a
friend ( on 1 or 2 wheels) to keep you company, bikes do go faster than us
downhill and it is rather loney getting left behind. Have fun sarah

A year after I learned to ride, My friend Bradley and I went to our first March
of Dimes Superide. They had just switched it from 50 miles to 75k (a difference
which allows us to raise more money while riding about the same distance).

We did it on our Schwinn Giraffes, which had been converted for speed with large
chainrings on top, giving a little less than 2:1 gear ratio.

Knackered doesn’t begin to describe how we felt at the end of that day, but we
finished! And we went on to do it again in several subsequent years. Getting my
picture on the front page of a local newspaper didn’t hurt, either, and is my
oldest unicycle press clipping. We were the first to start and the last to
finish, riding around Detroit’s Belle Isle (where the Detroit Grand Prix is now
held), and it was worth every mile. Kilometer.

WOW! 75km. How long did this take? I assume the giraffes were 20" wheels geared
up with the 2:1 ratio. I’m amazed! nic

I don’t remember exactly but… long. We stopped for lunch and many breaks, and
we were not exactly in shape for such an event. probably 6 hours total. I think
our ratios were 26:48 and yes, the wheels were 20". Here’s a picture:

big wheel!
