Doh, I broke my seat!

What a bummer, I’m riding on down the trail yesterday and my KH saddle feels like it’s moving around a bit. I stop to tighten the four nuts that hold the seat to the post and the back left one feels pretty loose so I go to snug it down but it doesn’t feel like it is gettting any tighter. I had a feeling something was wrong so I went to unscrew it so I could get a better look and the second I put counter-clockwise on the nut the bolt broke off inside the nut! :astonished:
My question to ya’ll…is this fixable? If I dismantle the seat is this simply gonna be as easy as replacing a carriage bolt? Or is the seat basically screwed now?

Thanks peeps…

just change de bolt

Sofa fixed his with threaded rod instead of carriage bolts as they will just spin now. I’m not exactly sure how he did it as I haven’t seen it yet. Try searching his posts or seat fixes or something like that and you should find an answer.

Is it a carriage bolt that is up in the seat, in otherwords would I have to pull the cover off the seat?
Or is it a headless bolt that is screwed up into a plastic thread, in which case I will just need to use an extracter to get it out and put a new one in(this would be so much easier than ripping my seat apart)??

It is a carriage bolt. Be ready for lots of glue stuff and a lot of work. Be careful when taking the staples out of the seat cover.

The bolts on my KH are going as well. I was wondering if it were possible to fix without taking the seat apart. More specifically, I was wondering if it would be possible to use one of those anchors used for screwing into drywall. The way I figure, if you can get the old bolt out, you could just shove the anchor into the foam. I think the main problem with this would be the strength of the anchor. I just don’t want to have to take the KH apart; it seems like a pain to put back together.

Any thoughts?

I had this same problem with my old KH seat, except that two of the bolts were spinning, and the seat had significant flex. I had to use a hacksaw to get the seat off the post. The stiffener plate (the thingie the carriage bolts sit in) was cracked and stripped.

I then implemented the $48 solution.

The new seat is MUCH improved, and I didn’t have to put the old one back together.

I hear what you’re sayin’ there mscalisi. I think for all hassle of fixing the seat I’ll just order a new one.
First thing I’m gonna do is take off the acorn nuts and put on nylon insert lock nuts, then I shouldn’t have any issues with the nuts backing off.

New seat is ordered…but I’m gonna ride this one until it breaks clear off

It’s for the best to order a new one or KH CF base, as it’s the metal stiffener plate that stops the bolt spinning and this usually snaps leaving a wobbly seat and spinning bolts… I’ve bust 3 KHs this way. Can’t wait for the next generation ones.

Next generation? Are the kh24s that are getting into stock in a few weeks gonna be “new generation”, or should i anticipate the spinning bolts problem too?

i think Kris said the new ones will have removeable covers. So it’ll be a lot easier to replace the bolt.

I believe the current generation addresses the spinning bolt issue, as well as having a different cover material for the seat and being much cushier.

The next generation will have removable covers and according to KH in this this thread, will be available summer/fall

I also believe Kris said the new generation of seats won’t appear until 3rd or 4th quarter of this year…

EDIT mscalisi beat me to it  :stuck_out_tongue:
