Rather than replying Iāll post an in-depth review of your post in the Product Reviews section, Gildā¦
Phil
Iām pretty sure I have written a few posts that had absolutely nothing to do with reviewing unicycling equipment.
Huh, whadya know? This appears in the same issue of The Onion.
Circus Runaway Not Looking Forward To Hometown Show
SACRAMENTO, CAāMichael MacAlester, who ran away from his native Sacramento at 16 to join the circus, is not looking forward to the Big Top Circusā show this Friday in his hometown. āThe idea of getting the hell out of Sacramento and joining a traveling circus was really exciting, but I guess I shouldāve thought to check the schedule,ā MacAlester, 18, a unicycling clown, said Monday. āI asked the ringmaster if I could possibly sit this one out, but he said no way.ā MacAlester said he plans to wear extra-heavy make-up in case his parents happen to be in attendance.

heard the funniest āonionā related story today
a while ago, while the whole āis harry potter a satanic influence on our kidsā discussion was rippling thru the ranks of the terminally stupid, a very conservative south african author (maretha maartens) quoted āthe onionā as the source of proof that jk rowlings is a witch
i canāt decide which is funnier, that someone like the arch-conservative maartens would even know of āthe onionā
or that she just didnāt get it!
Iāve been having a lot of trouble formatting posts lately

Similarly, a while back a Chinese journalist reported the story that the US Congress, citing run down facilities at the Capitol, were threatening to move out of Washington, DC unless funds were authorized to construct for them a new building. Apparently he took the story verbatim from The Onion.
Is there a big difference between knowing of The Onion and not getting it and not knowing of the existence of The Onion at all?

Isnāt that the difference between stupidity and ignorance?
Dave (uni57)
if FREEDOM is the distance between church and state, what would u call the distance between stupidity and ignorance?
or, more importantly, what would u call the bridge from there to the real world?
reading?
Curiosity?
Klaas Bil
Well, now, not to get too heavy, but first off I think Dave hit on something with the stupidity vs ignorance comment. I was trying to get at something deeper than stupidity, a state of conditioning that immunizes one from even recognizing the Onion as humor, but perhaps that is too far to go. Anyway, not unlike some of the commentary in RSU regarding certain people for whom unicycles are outside their scope and so they donāt even see them, so is the Onion for some. Thatās sort of what I was getting at. (Canāt find that original thread now. )
But on to Klaasā one word comment. Yes, I agree. Reading is part of curiousity, as is asking questions and listening. It has always seemed to me that the curious are the ones who have the most answers (not all the answers, but the most) and are further along on the journey (not at or even near the end, but further along) wherever that may be.

I used to work with a guy who was a pretty smart fella. I left the onionās web site up on a computer and he came by and was reading it. I donāt remember what the article was, but it was something ridiculous about a senator. The guy I worked with emailed the senator to ask if the allegations were true.
Throughout human history, the lack of ability to appreciate ironic or satirical humor has been well-documented. Certainly, weāve seen enough of this comedic deficiency on this very forum often enough to be convinced the continuation of the problem well into our so-called āmodernā age.
We could be cruel, and assign the blame to a lack of intelligenceā¦ or, we could be kind, and argue that certain individuals just donāt āget itā because of an inherent insufficiency of cerebral matter and/or experience and/or knowledge and/or basic pedestrian cognitive potency.

Listenā¦ do you hear the breeze?
OT, you know what bugs me?
Having to highlight sendhairs text every time I want to hear what he has to say (Which is more often than not)ā¦
I would usually agree, I generally dislike people using funny fonts and stuffā¦ butā¦ Iāve got used to Sendhairās green posts. They should be read carefully and slowly, with your mind using a very quiet voiceā¦ the green just makes sure you donāt rush itā¦
