well… i was wondering…
what is the smallest piece of land that i can purchase from the government?
iwas hoping to do something completely useless:
buy ONE (1) square yard of land from the government, and secede from the USA, making the smallest country in the world.
No one would waste the time and money to sell you a piece of land like that. It would be like going to a gas station and telling them you want to buy one drop of gasoline. They’re going to ask you to leave. Even if you did buy a piece of land, you can’t make your own country.
Yeah, of course you could buy land from someone other than the government, like buy a square yard of your parents front lawn or something? What would actually happen if you did this is that America would expel you to your new country (all 1 square yard of it), put up high border fences and in about 3 days you’d be dead from lack of water. Or they could argue that what you’re doing effectively counts as invasion and shoot you on the spot. If this was going to work do you not think other people might have done it by now?
A friend and I phoned up a company last week that was selling office premises near us for £5 per square foot.
We asked if we could get a foot off them as we had a fiver on us. They refused.
They wouldn’t even let us take 2 square feet off them.
Suckers.
Good luck with your state. Check out the story of SeaLand for some pointers. http://www.sealandgov.com/
i dunno. i think you can buy single acres of unclaimed worthless land from the government out west still, try rural SE oregon, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, etc. some homesteading act is still technically in effect and land is almost free. good luck getting out of the union. the whole south tried that once…didn’t work.
Yeah but even when you own the land the government still rules over it, international waters is still your best bet. To quote The Simpsons:
Police to Homer et al: Don’t cross the boundary of our waters or we won’t be abe to arrest you.
In the wilderness a little ways from were I live, this guy found a section of land about 10 acres in size, that nobody owned, it wasnt claimed or anything. He had it surveyed, checked all the maps, etc. etc. etc. and it was just…land. The forest service didnt own it, nothing. So he homesteaded it, built a cabin on it, and claimed it. For free.
Maybe we as the unicyclist community should club together and try and create our own country somewhere, we seem to have a vast array of intelligent and powerful members from all walks of life on here there must be some lawyers/diplomats/soldiers who can help us out. How would our country be different to others to make it better for unicyclists? I think that all the traffic lights over pavements should be high enough that you can ride a 5 1/2 ft giraffe under them without bumping your head, that gets me every time i go out on it.
Are the traffic lights that low in the U.K.? Top legal height here for vehicles is 13’-6". Traffic lights need to be higher than that. Did you mean your 15½ foot giraffe?
