One of the reasons I started unicycling is because I thought that it would be a good core workout. I am a goalie and like most sports, core strength is pretty important.
Any goalies out there?
I have probably confused all the Canadians by calling it “Ice” hockey. Is there any other kind of hockey?
I’m a goalie, I was pretty good too.
I’m going to start playing goalie again this summer hopefully too.
In fact, my username comes from my favorite goalie Nikolai Khabibulan
I caught a few Chicago games on TV and I really enjoyed watching Khabby play this year. I hope that bringing in Huet doesn’t mean that he is on his way out.
I was trying figure out whether I have a favorite goalie but I don’t think that I do. I kind of like Kiprusoff’s (sp?) technique and I find I root for Tim Thomas because he has been a bit of an underdog.
UniHockey! How could I forget unihockey!
I would love to get enough rider together to play.
I have played ice hockey 5 years in hawaii, but haven’t played in 5 years.( The budget had to be transferred to other endeavors.) It cost a lot of money to keep water frozen here. Never played goalie, but I have the urge to try. I like the quick reactions, freestyle moves, and cutting off the angle that being a goalie has to offer.
I believe riding an unicycle is the “best” cross training activity for sports of all kind.
it’s close to hockey, it’s played in norway, sweden, finland and russia…
different skates, not as tall and you can get “Bandy-iron”(directly translated from norwegian) and more square-ish, and it’s better for bandy… sticks are different, and not as much protection… there’s fences on the side, low ones, 10 cm i think… bigger goal than hockey, and there’s no fence on the sides, so there’s a corner like in football. It’s much more free and a lot more fun than hockey
Wow! I’ve never heard of bandy before. The stick looks like a cross between an ice hockey and a field hockey stick. You must have to skate in a real crouch when playing the ball. That is the thing that looks challenging about field hockey. When you are stick handling, you have to really bend over/ crouch down.
How are the skates different?
Edit; sorry you explained the skates. If they are more square are they more like hockey goalie skates? The blade is flatter and wider.
well yea it’s a lot flatter but i dont know if it’s a lot wider:o
and the skates doesn’t have the flap on the top, they’re shorter in a way, for better movement, but it takes more practice to use and more balance… lets you tuck more for shooting and stuff… and you hold the stick probably like a golf stick?? and use one hand on it often for better movement… it’s a lot of fun you should search on youtube and see if you see any clips
edit:
here’s a good bandy clips… you can see that the field is much larger than the hockey field, goals are bigger, there are cornershots etc
I watched a bunch of videos. That looks like fun! There is a lot of room for the skaters and it is pretty fast. It seems like the skaters are skating on longer blades (faster with less side to side). I could be wrong.
Does the ball go out of bounds often?
I would love to try goaltending for bandy. I don’t think I would be able to stop a thing ! I rely so much on creating a big blocking surface and I don’t have super fast reactions. The angles are huge and the goalies have good t-pushes to cover that distance. They have to come way out of the net. A good cross crease pass must score often. Thanks for introducing bandy to me. I really want to head over to Europe to try it!
i’ve got a friend that’s goalie for the local team, he was also in my school-team when we got shared first place in the norwegian championship that was a lot of fun… you cant rely on making yourself big, you gotta literally jump after some balls, and you need fast reflexes
and yea the ball goes out sometimes, but if it goes over the sides, there’s just a shoot-in, and if it goes over the goal line, there’s keepers throw or cornershots. there’s cards like in football, but just a lot more of them…
I was looking at the Kosa website and checking out the Bandy equipment. It seems like there aren’t many companies that make gear for the sport. Do a lot of people were hockey gear instead as it is common? Is that allowed?
The skates look a lot like goalie skates without the protective cowling around the boot.
It seem like this is an arctic circumpolar sport for the most part. It should be a sport in the Arctic Winter Games but I guess that Sweden/Finland/Norway aren’t part of that organization.
It gets pretty pricey. I bought cheap low end gear at the start and ended up upgrading pretty much everything after finding that the cheap stuff just did not protect enough or last. It is worth it to spend the money, depending on what level you are playing. It is nice to have the option of playing against stronger shooters.
These are new prices - If you know what you are looking for and check for deals, you could do better that this. This is just a range for reasonably protective gear; Pads $600 - 1600 - I wouldn’t go cheaper than that new as they wear pretty fast. Pants - $100 - 200 - If you are going to skimp, this is the place. I have cheap pants and they have lasted pretty well. Chest protector - $300 - 600 Skates - $200 - 800 - Depends how fussy you are - I have cheaper skates and I love them and won’t replace them until they wear out. Mask - MINIMUM $300 - This is the most important piece of equipment. Don’t get a plastic/polycarbonate mask. Make sure it is fibreglass w/ at least kevlar reinforcements. I took a slapshot in the forehead with my first mask (Fibreglass) and it cracked right through. If it had been a plastic mask, I think I would have had faced brain damage at the very least. As it was, I had a concussion for a week. My new mask has a full kevlar layer and is made by a great small company called Hackva (it has features of masks twice it’s price. Glove and blocker set - $300 - 1000 - if you are playing beer league, they probably aren’t checking sizes and you can get great deals on gear that is no longer NHL legal. Throat protector/ jock - $75 - 150
Suspenders/socks/tape misc. - $40
Sticks - $50 - 300
You can get decently outfitted with new gear for about $2000. If you find deals on Glove/Blocker/Pad set you might even get cheaper.
I noticed that you are in Hawaii. The big goalie dealer in the US is Goalie Monkey. In Canada, Don Simmons is good. They make some of their own gear and they sell in the states as well. They often have sales. You could also try the Hockey Shop in Vancouver.
Here they have 2 seasons and summer pick-up every year. I will check in to see how their "supply’’ of goalies are. If they’re short, I could play for free.
