Does a 20" x 30" Tyre Exist?

Does a 20" x 30" Tyre Exist? If so, what is it? Also, does anyone know which of the Alex DX-32 or the Monty rim is the biggest?

Thanks,
Andrew

<pedant>

a 20 inch diameter, 30 inch width tyre? Wow! That really puts a Gazz 3" to shame…

Phil, just me

Well I’ve certainly made a fool of myself haven’t I? I guess that’ll get people’s attension. Sorry to get your hopes up everyone but yes, I did mean 3.0"

Back to the question though…

As far as I know, there are no 20x3 trials tires. There where rumors a while back that
somebody was making one, but I don’t know if it actually happened. I’m not sure that a tire
that big would even be desirable for trials. At a certain point, what you gain in bouncyness is
lost in weight. The 2.5" Monty tire is excellent for trials, and I don’t think you will be
disappointed with it.

What dimension where you asking about the rims? I think the Monty is slightly wider, but
that’s judging by comparing the two by eye, not any actual measurements. Its very close
either way. I’ve also heard that the Alex is a little stronger, but again, no confirmed
information.

Ben

I think its worth noting that these numbers seem fairly transient. My Monty 20"x2.5" is definitely wider than my Kenda 26"x2.6". I can’t explain why…I just know that it is.

The standard for measuring tyre widths is a bit strange. The actual width of a tyre depends on the width of the rim you put it on

I’m talking about the widest section of the rim (ie. the outermost part of it. Do you know what colour the Alex rim comes in? I’m satisfied now nowing that I’ll be getting a tyre that’s probably the widest you can get, or close to it anyway. I’ll probably get the Monty tyre and Alex rim. My custom unicycle’s going to be great!

Thanks,
Andrew

I wasn’t there because I had to go back to my boring life before the end of the convention, but…

Wasn’t there somebody at the MUni events at UNICON IX who had a motorcycle tire on his trials uni? I think I saw a picture that somebody posted.

I think Steve Weber is the guy who had the motorcycle tire.

Re: Does a 20" x 30" Tyre Exist?

Guy Hansen has a homebuilt rim onto which he mounted a 4" wide tire. It’s
heavy. But it looks cool.

The Hansen’s had it at Unicon (although I didn’t get to see it while I was
there). Someone (Harper?) snapped a picture of it and it can be seen here:

To accomodate the width of the tire the frame was squished and bent around
it. Overall, it’s not exactly strong. With a well designed rim and a
proper frame I imagine it would be much stronger but still heavy.

Re: Re: Does a 20" x 30" Tyre Exist?

Yes, that’s my photo. So, Guy built it? I’m pretty sure that’s Steve Weber in the photo. He was riding it on the downhill course for that shot.

Only if there was more than one Steve weber. The one in the picture is not the steve weber from Tcuc.

I believe that the rumored 3 inch wide 20" was supposidly made by Da Bomb Bikes

Re: Does a 20" x 30" Tyre Exist?

I don’t know Steve Weber. That’s Brian Hansen (Guy’s son) pictured with the
fat tire. There was another rider at Unicon that bore a resemblance to
Brian perhaps that’s Steve?
