Do you lock your ride?

Does anybody here lock their rides up to bike racks or anything, whilest in public? I generally take mine into stores if I’m only gonna be a minute, but college is starting soon, and I’m wondering if people lock 'em up outside.

I’m probably not going to, my mind would be outside at the bike rack all day instead of in the classroom

lock-up

i hardly ever take the machine out of my car without either riding it or being very close to it, ie juggling
if u r going to take it to college, i would lock it
u do need to concentrate on the lectures

When I’ve taken mine out I’ve always locked it. Admittedly this has only
been a few times, but if I can’t take it around with me all the time I’d
rather have it locked up than loose… I’d imagine it’s a quite easy thing
to walk off with. Or even if they don’t walk off with it I don’t want
anyone having a go on my uni without me letting them.

Of course locking the thing up is half the fun, as you unicycle up to a
shop’s bike rack and lock it up acting as if it’s perfectly normal while
all around look on in amazement…

The only annoying thing is that on my bike the lock has a holder; on the
uni you’ve got to put it in a backpack or something. And you’ve got to
remember to take the thing off the bike in the first place (I’ve only got
one lock)…

I went to Asda (er… Walmart) on my muni (no Coker in those days) and
locked it up.

When I came out I was followed by another cyclist. His bike was chained
up next to my uni and, eyeing each other somewhat, we proceeded to unlock
our vehicles, pack away the locks, sort our lights out, … all in parallel.
I guess
you had to be there, but there was something quite humorous about the
situation.

As he was leaving he turned to me with a smile and said simply “Nice bike.”.
Cool - no “lost wheel” irritations.

I think it’s great fun doing “ordinary” things on a unicycle. Last time I
went shopping on mine was for some white spirit; I got lots of funny looks
carrying the stuff back on a unicycle. And then at the weekend going
around with an umbrella… doesn’t half confuse people when they see it’s
a form of transport and not only a circus trick…

Uh…er… Unless your uni has a Hunter-style frame, the only thing you can really lock up is the wheel. I’m surprised this has not come up yet. How do you lock up the whole thing?

I lock mine up very much like a bike if there’s nothing handy to lock it
to; the D-lock goes through the spokes of the wheel, between the forks and
around whatever you’re locking it too.

Admittedly you can still unlock it by taking the wheel off but it should
act as enough of a deterrent for most potential uni-thieves.

Although that’s not as much of a problem as with a bike… nick all but a
wheel of a bike and you’ve got yourself a mostly complete bike; nick all
but the wheel of a uni and you look like an idiot, there’s not much
left…

I have some rules of thumb on whether I bring the uni in:

  1. Restaurants with counter service are OK. Hostess seating, it stays outside.
  2. I usually don’t bring it in the first time I go to a particular
classroom or conference room. If I’ve been to a place before and
figured out where I could put a unicycle without it getting in the
    way, I’ll bring it in.
  3. No riding in the building. Yeah, you could do it, but the building
manager’s gonna get pissed off if he sees you.

When I leave it outside, I lock just the wheel. Yes, someone could take
the wheel off, but that’s rather a pain with the Miyata bearing holders.

Kryptonite has a cable lock called the KryptKeeper which coils fairly
nicely, and has a slotted lock holder which works reasonably well on a
unicycle–the lock bracket is very low profile (the lock slots into it),
so if you don’t need the lock on a particular trip you can leave it home
and not have a big thing to whack your legs on for those UPD’s. (It does
have a couple sharp edges, but it’s better than most).

Most recently, I wheeled up to the local store with my dog, Buster the Disguster, in tow. When I went inside the store I simply leashed Buster to the yike. They were both there when I came out.

I work at Georgetown University and I ride in most decent-weathered days. I lock up my street uni at the bike rack. If I ride my new MUni there, its going in the building with me.

Thanks for the insight, just so everyone is clear, I didn’t want to leave it outside unlocked…I meant locked outside or leave at home.

USE LONG BENDABLE LOCK!

yes use those long bendable locks, that roll up sorta, you put em through you spokes, then around your frame were your tire is, then if ou have enuf slak, you wrapp it around your seat post of the frame, were your seat post goes in, you wrapp it around that real tight, then around the unmovable object. there.

I commute on my muni, so I lock it at the bike rack at work. I use a big log chain through the wheel with a big “American” brand lock. I usually leave the chain at the bike rack all the time, but I have worn it around my waist bike messenger style. I hope my Coker will fit in the rack. I may have to modify the rack to fit it. Shouldn’t be a problem as I’m the only cycle commuter at work. cheers, Joe in rainy Iowa, waiting for my Coker to be here in three days, woo hoo!

Normaly I lock mine with a cable lock, round the bike rack, though the
wheel, through the
frame (one side of one fork, the otherside of the other) and through one
pedal. If I have a lid to leave with it I put the lock through on of the
lid vents.

When locking a pile of unis, just do your best to get the chain through
each wheel AND something solid. The cokers that were nicked a few years
back, were not chained to a solid enough thing.
