(Louisiana purchase)
In order, the complicated process the united states went through to get the Louisiana territory. By a treaty signed on April 30, 1803, the United States bought Louisiana Territory from France, more than 2 million square miles of land ranging from the Mississippi River, to the Rocky Mountains. The price was about $15 million dollars. Mr. Napoleon Bonaparte foreseen a new French empire, and wished to see the Mississippi territory as a market center to directly supply to Hispaniola, which was the ‘to be’ heart of his empire. Thomas Jefferson sent James Monroe and Robert Livingston to Paris to consider the purchase of the Louisiana territory or a guarantee of free navigation of the river. Delighted by the French’s offer of the whole territory, they negotiated the treaty. In one fluent strike of the pen, the US doubled in size.
December 20th, 1803, the French turned Louisiana over to the United States. Believe it or not, The Louisiana Territory, purchased for less than 5 cents an acre, was one of Thomas Jefferson’s greatest contributions to his country. Literally over night, the US doubled its size, Leading to new expansion outbursts everywhere.
(Annexation of Texas)
Excited to have the State of Texas annexed to the United States, The southern people had desire, and that was a very confident feeling in that State. The people of the North opposed “The proposition”, Annexation would increase slave power, and would lead to a huge war with Mexico. A treaty was signed in Washington,DC, April 12th, 1844, by Mr. Calhoun (Secretary of State). The treaty didn’t pass and was rejected in June. James Polk was nominated over Mr. Van Buren, because James was in favor of the annexation. On the last day of his presidential term, he sent a letter to the government of Texas stating the join resolutions of congress in favor for the annexation. Via convention in Texas, they were considering take these changes and utilizing them. Those people approved the measure on July 4th, 1845, and on that day Texas became one of the biggest States of the Union.
