Do it yourself questions

Does anybody know of a good website where it tells you how to:
A: Replace a rim
B: Replace spokes
C: Replace a hub

I just learned of the large amounts of money that go into fixing these things at bike shops. They won’t just replace your rim if you dent it. They make you buy a new wheel. It would be much more economical if all I had to buy was the spoke or the rim and then I do all the work.

Any help would be awesome

Might start at Sheldon Brown http://www.sheldonbrown.com/ Go to “repair tips” then “wheelbuilding”

Has anyone mentioned Sheldon Brown’s website yet? :stuck_out_tongue:

That seems pretty surprising to me. Do you mean they won’t replace just a rim or that it’d be cheaper to get a whole new wheel? I work part-time at a bike shop and there’s a lot of time spent in replacing a rim. They should do it for you, but it’s fair enough that it costs a lot.

There is a spoke length calculator at http://www.unicycle.uk.com/SpokeCalc.asp. If you buy new spokes or a different type of rim you’ll need to tell your bike shop the correct spoke length so they can cut 'em.
