anyone got one of these?

that, my friend, is an ultimate wheel, loads of people have them, i made one once, it was bad

have you used one this brand and are these super hard to ride for long?

i think the one he’s got there is the nimbus 28" (i could be wrong)

i cant really comment if theyre hard to ride for long, but i would imagine so

people who can ride those have real talent.
i dont have one to learn on though.
i do have socks like that, however.

cool I am glad to hear you have socks like that:)

that sentence reminds me of exactly how aim bots speak. lol

Not really. The people who can ride them well have talent. Just riding one poorly is not an elite skill. If you already know how to ride seat out fairly well you should be able to wobble 20 yards on an ultimate wheel after a couple hours of practice.

I have two.

The one in the video is a 24" Nimbus from Unicycle.com. I have the same model. I also have a 24" UW from Bedford.

I can ride them, but I’m not very proficient. I need to practice on them more.

and if i take off the fork of my unicycle

its become a ultimate??

No seat, no frame. Only the wheel, and the cranks/pedals.

take all that stuff off, it will be an ultimate, but super hard to ride cause the pedals have a big (bicycling) Q factor, the closer the pedals to the centre of the wheel the better

I tried ultimate wheeling with just the wheel of my dad’s 24" uni (without frame and seat) and I couldn’t do it. I also need to practise more.

That’s sometimes referred to as a cranky ultimate wheel. A unicycle wheel with cranks and pedals. It is harder to ride than a purpose built disc style UW.

The problem with cranky ultimate wheels is that you cannot allow them to rub your legs as you ride. As soon as the wheel (tire) rubs your leg you fall off, not to mention that the tire rubbing your leg like that will hurt. So to ride a cranky UW you have to do it perfectly and control the wheel flop with pressure on both pedals. Tricky.

With a disc style UW you can allow the wheel to rub your legs a bit. And the narrower Q-factor means that there isn’t as much imbalance to cause wheel flop as you pedal.

I can ride a disc style UW but can’t (yet) manage a cranky UW. They’re two different animals.

Tips for easier UW riding:

Use a tire with a smooth sidewall that doesn’t have any tread on the sidewall. Spray the sidewall with silicone spray (you can get it at auto parts stores and it comes in a spray can). Silicone spray will make the sides of the tire more slippery so it can rub more smoothly against your legs.

Wear 661 leg armor, neoprene leg armor, or something similar that the tire can rub smoothly against.

Pump up the tire till it’s firm. Probably 50+ psi. A firm tire is easier to ride than a squishy tire.

hi,

my friend and I are building a uw. we are nearly finished we just have to assemble the parts. it*s a 26" tire…

now the question is how far away the pedals have to be from the center… should I measure my 20" unicycle and position them like it is there?.. is it easier when they are nearer from the center?

thanks for any advise!

Katrin

My avatar is me riding an UW, only difference is the one i was riding was 36".

I think 145mm cranks would be a pretty good size for a 26" wheel, and by “cranks” I mean “the distance from the center of the wheel to the pedals”.

And yes, they are quite awesome.

I have two 24" ultimate wheels. The Bedford has 125mm cranks and the UDC Nimbus has 150mm cranks. The 150mm cranks give me more control of the UW and I like that length better. The 125mm cranks are smoother though.

For a 26" UW I’d recommend cranks that are 150mm or slightly longer.

You can consider putting two sets of pedal holes in the UW. Have one set of holes at say 155mm and one set of holes at say 130mm. Try both lengths and see which you like best.

thanks for the tipps… I think I will try it with something between 145 and 150… if anyone is interessed I can post pictures when it’s finished…

I think really short cranks might make an UW easier to ride. As well as going faster, being easier to turn on, and easier to spin on.

I should try it out some time. I get this idea from an old (1940s?) picture I have of some performing group with a bunch of girls on large ultimate wheels (like 30" or more) with pedals very close to the center.

are 20" unltimate wheels alot harder?
