distance unicycle

Has anyone out there tried a multi-speed uni? I have read some info in the past on this subject but all seam to lack credibility. Seems to me that by utilizing bicycle componentry, new hights ( speed and comfort) can be realized.

I have owned several big wheels in the past, The Coker is by far the best, however there is still a lot of room for improvement.

The wheel needs to be larger ( at least for me)
lighter
truer
higher pressure tire

All of this seems to be impossible, but I belive that its closer than we think with the introduction of the Coker. This has brought about many distance enthusiasts like myself.

Its only a matter of time before we all put our heads and money together to deveop a much better distance uni.

I have some interest in the subject of geared unis. I think the problem is
that there is no good design yet. On a chain-driven bicycle a multispeed
hub such as a Sturmey Archer the rider can change gear on the fly. This
could work the same on a chain-driven unicycle but not on the usual type
without chain. What you could do still is set the gear before you mount
and then leave it till your next dismount. Besides, a regular Sturmey
Archer hub has a freewheel which is inadequate for a uni (you need torque
both ways). Don’t know if it can be modified to be “fixed”. Otherwise,
maybe an automatic gear shifting mechanism could be used, I seem to
remember having read about this being available for bicycles.

As I have mentioned before in the group, an engineer friend of mine who
started unicycling early this year, is interested in designing and
building a prototype geared unicycle. But first he has to finish his
current project of competing in Robot Wars (few weeks now but took him 6
months), and then he may need some time for family life …
