distance riders

I was just wondering what, if anything you all carry with you on your
rides? Do you use a CamelBak or something else or nothing at all? If a
CamelBak what model do you use? Just curious.

Depends on how hot and how far. For shorter rides I use either a small backpack hydration system or a waist bottle holder that runners use- my back doesn’t get as sweaty with it. For long trips, especially Muni rides and overnight camping, I use an Ultimate Direction pack- the Tailwind model. It has a TorsoLink feature on the shoulder straps which I’ve found great off-road with a load.

I’m just curious – for your long overnight MUni rides… How far are you going, on what kind of terrain? How heavy is your pack? What elevations are we talking about, and in what season?

Hi,

I had the same response, as U-turn, how far are you riding?

I use the Expurt model made by Ultimate direction for rides of 1 - 3 hours. It is really great. It has a waist belt and wide shoulder straps and the entire
shoulder strap arrangement can be lowered or raised, not just loosening the straps. Good inside mesh pockets. I bought it back in december from one of the mail order houses. It was either REI or Campmore. I don’t remember. At the time, it was on close out, so I don’t know if they make them anymore.
Try a search with “hydration” or “hydration packs” here on the newsgroup for older comments.

Others have written about the superiority of this pack in past posts. I bought mine when John Childs recommended it. I have
been very happy with it. Some feel it is better all around then the
camelback models of the same size.

Work the maze.

My last overnight trip was a month ago in a two day mountain bike orienteering race- the Polaris challenge. There are time limits set both days- 7 and 5 hours - and you have to be totally self- sufficient and camp overnight. It’s done in teams of two for safety.
First day we did 40k and 2nd day 30k in 6 and 4 hours respectively. This included stopping for photos, eating, finding check-points and talking to amazed spare-wheelers. The pack weighed 11kg including 3litres of water at the start. The terrain varied from single-track to open fire-trail to bush bashing. We finished 213th out of 282 teams and were the only unicyclists.
Previously I’ve also done a day trip of 50k on fire-trail and single-track which involved a descent of about 700m to a valley and then climbing out again. Pack was only about 6kg then.

Re: distance riders

I use a Camelback classic for moderately hard Muni
on a 6 mile trail. There’s no place to refill so I use most
of the 2 liters. I thought it would bother me in free-mounting
and riding, but I hardly notice it. It works pretty well, but
I have to stop and bend over like a biker to drink from
the spigot.

I try to avoid carrying anything beyond a fanny pack when I ride to/from
home (13 miles each way) on my Coker. On occasion I have carried shopping
bags (once I took home a huge stuffed animal and a few board games).

When I ride Bike NY (50mi including the ride back) or longer, I will have
a CamelBak or other water source if I can’t just stop to buy water. I’d
rather carry nothing more than my own body if possible, but I go along
with clothes just because without them I’d be pretty uncomfortable.

David carries these in case he is mugged by a pack of 8 year olds. NYCity is ruff…
