Dipping the handle

Hey there,
I was wondering if i could dip my miyata handle in a melted pvc pipe dip?
well first i’d have to melt the crack back togeather but throw me a bone here,

Aaron

Go for it. Let us know the outcome.

anyone know the melting point of the miyata seat handle and pvc pipe???

Thnx
Aaron

Re: Dipping the handle

Are you talking about a commercial dip product or are you going to melt a
PVC pipe?

Molten PVC can release chlorine gas. This chlorine can combine with the
moisture in your lungs and form HCL acid. At least do it outside…

Re: Dipping the handle

The handle is probably polypropylene or polyethylene. The PVC will probably
melt first. The materials won’t bond together very well.

How about this? Clean the faces of the tear with alcohol. Heat a thin
knife (steak or butter knife or razor blade) and melt both faces of the tear
at the same time. Quickly force the faces back together.

Pictures, please…

Doug

I don’t know about a miyata handle, or the whole PVC thing…but what i do know is this:

I Have a reeder handle. I bought some rubber that you are supposed to dip ends of pliers in(or other tools, to insulate the handle) I took my handle and put about two coats on it. After I was done I took a razor and cut where my grip was going to be. It worked well, but since then I got a new handle.

have at it- Aaron

My cousen had his miyata handle plated in steel by some random unicycling welding mt snow employee. The only flex left in the grip is from the seat frame itself. May be able to get pictures up soon.

how about some Krazy glue.

Re: Dipping the handle

I find Miyata’s go much better with French Onion or Picante Sauce. If you’re feeling cultured, try Spinach-Artachoke Dip alla Viscount. Ummmmm- good!

The fix we did on Ben’s cracked Miyata handle seems to remain solid even after doing drops off the float in recent parades. I’ll post the picture again.

Re: Dipping the handle

That looks great! You could probably even get rid of the other two bolts
that probably aren’t doing any good now.

Whats the name of that glue that melts plastic to bond it togeather???

Fire?

The key here was glue

Re: Dipping the handle

It’s called “Cement for plastic models”.

From http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/tes/tes3501.htm
“Quick drying cement for plastic models.
Joins polystyrene to polystyrene and polystyrene to wood.
Also useful for repairing household items made of polystyrene or ABS
plastics.”

I’m not sure what the Miyata handles are made of but perhaps this would work
to repair the cracks. It actually sorta disolves the plastic and literally
creates a “weld” in the plastic.

I really dont know how much I would trust any fix to the plastic itself when the plastic itself broke in the first place. the glue will likely not be stronger then the origonal platic was, and it cracked. Even if the fix was stronger, you would likely end up with a crack in another place before long. I would go with something to reenforce the plastic with a brace or something like Doug posted. Although I kinda also like the miyata and salsa idea.

my dad is going to put bolts like yoopers in only he’s going to reinforce it with a piece of stainless steel bent at 90 degrees so it hooks into both bolts (normal one and yooper one)

i’ll get some pics…

Aaron

Aaron, that’s a great idea. Should work great and pictures will be even better. Who needs Miyata design engineers. All we need to do is put our heads together…of course then we’ll probably look like one big many-headed Frankenmonster.
