Dietary Sleep Aids?

Can’t sleep- tried taking magnesium supplements, Lunestra, Sealus- no help. Won’t do alcohol or cannibus- same for codine.

Ideas?

if you won’t use drugs, um, run. a whole lot? like 10 miles.

Physical exaustion has no great impact; I had hope that it would. Timing ingestion and quantity likewise has no appreciable impact…

I work nights and take Melatonin. It effects people differently. For us night workers, we don’t produce enough of it naturally so it helps. I usually take a 3mg dose 20 minutes before I want to be asleep and grab a book… zzzzzz (drool…)

Sometimes you wake up 4 hours later like someone just flicked your ON switch. Other times you sleep until the alarm clock goes off. Good stuff.

Answer.com’s information on Melatonin

Thanx Mr. T- I’ll drop by the pharmacey and see if I can score some; will post results. BTW: side effects include reduced lebido. Not sure of OD results.

Anybody know of anything that can suppress dream activity and/or quiet transient thought? Codine works well for the later… but also impinges on motivation in general- and is remarkablely habit forming/ prone to dependancey.

have u considered seeking professional advice on possible sleep-disorders?
a poly-somnogram might do u no harm

Thanks for the thought- but I’ve mapped out the path of my sleep-history and have identified the cause. Occasionally I’ll get as mutch as 7 hours of sleep for a couple 3 nights in a row- or average 4.5 hours a night for 2 months. Been making progress recently… makes it all the worse when my expectations are raised, plans made- then Morphius jilts me.

I used to have issues with sleep too. Then one day, for no particular reason I shaved off all my hair(on my head). Almost immediately my sleep improved. Since then I have kept my hair less than an inch and sleep like a baby. You might want to give this a try.

Haha… you’re probably just trying to get him to shave his head.

Valarian root also works.

i take ambien when i need to. It’s a prescription sched. IV (IV= four, not intravenous) drug. I don’t notice any side effects, and get good sleep. I find it much much more helpful than any non-prescription remedies.

I wouldn’t recommend it for just anyone, though. I’ve been working rotating shift for almost 3 decades, so my circadian rythyms are pretty trashed.

ymmv, hth. sweet dreams.

Ahhh… that was the name- not “Sealus”. My employer was a psychiatrist- got all the Ambien I could stand… no help. Alot of people seem to find Ambien useful , though.

Thanx for the tip… will post feedback after use. Here is some info on Valerian root.

Seems that regular users may experience withdrawal symptoms…

I’ve heard of folks with sutch large 'Froes that they have to sleep with their head off the bead. Do you have a pre-shorn picture, Mr. Bug?

For now, I’ll just unbraid my hair… though I might just try it. Is 1 inch a critical #? (I tend to prefer metric)

I haven’t really experimented with various lengths. I had my hair around 4-5 inches long maybe longer, then decided to tkae it all down to a flat top. I didn’t particularly care for the shape of my head with an evenly shaved head, but the flat top suits me. Some people have better heads for short or bald cuts than others. I unfortunately am not on of them, or I just couldn’t get used to the look on me.

On Melatonin: some melatonin is derived from brain or spine tissues and can transmit nerologicical deseases (so says my pharmacist), so make sure the melatonin you’re taking is from vegetable sources.

Same pharmacist recommended Benadrill, commonly found in Tylonal PM, or, by itself in generic form as an allergy relief (Diphenhydramine). Draw back is that it commonly forms a dependancey; eventually, you can’t sleep without it.

It sucks not to be able to sleep, I have problems with it too sometimes, but I don’t know about sleep-aids. I don’t trust that stuff. Good luck all the same though.

Oh yeah, I had to take benedrill once for this spinal infection I had and, wow that stuff knocked me out. I couldn’t walk correctly and ended up falling onto my side trying to walk to my hospital room. It felt like I all of a sudden fell asleep while walking. Crazy stuff.

For any health or wellness issue, I always first check out what Dr. Mercola says. Your body is a complex system and should be treated as such – holistically (and naturally).

Excessive amounts of alcohol will always put you to sleep in a pinch.
