Has anyone else had a rim fail on them? This happened just recently to my OE Nimbus rim as a result of me running my Hoggy-G at high pressures. Looks like i’ll stick to narrower rims/tires if I try to do the freestyle thing again.
So it looks like people are pretty happy with the DX32, but now there is a new KH Rim available on UDC, that is really superwide at like 42 mm, sounds nice. It’s OE freeride equipment I think? How is this holding up for everyone? You guys still get foldover when you peck up the steeps at all?
my KH has been working super well
i only get foldovers on ridiculously steep hills (like 75-85 degrees)
eventhen, the foldovers aren’t total, just a little jump in the tire, not like a complete fold
The first generation of KH2005 model rims have sidewall failure… I saw FUego’s rim pop at Moab from a 2-3foot drop onto sand. But Kris said that the new batch going into UDC would have the sidewall flaws fixed.
But you can’t go wrong with the Alex DX32, and if you Order from Darren Bedford, he can powdercoat it a variety of cool colours!
colin those hills u me and trey did were not 80 degrees it was like 50 and then the top was like 60-65. OO and the tires never really fold a ton just make sure u dont hav too little of air pressure in it

When you ride straight up a hill (as opposed to slantingly) the pedal
or crank won’t hit the hill. Still I don’t believe the 80 nor the
later suggested correction of 60 - 65 degrees. I only believe measured
data and then if it’s steep like that, I want video too.

That’s more or less what happened to me. The rims on the nimbus are the same as the KH, I beleive, so that would explain that. I’m not sure if you could get it warrantied or not, but you should at least try. it was a manufacturing defect, so it ought to be under warranty. I got lucky because I met Kris at Moab, and he lent me a wheel.
as for good rims, sun doublewides are massive and really strong. I’d reccomend one of them.
You could get a KH, Arrow Racing DHX ( ), Atomlabs trailpimp, Atomlabs Aircorp, Atomlab GI dirt, Sun Doublewide, Halo Combat SAS (it’s nice in white), or a Halo Tornado (a lighter Combat SAS.
Those are just the ones that I can think of off the top of my head. They all come in 24 and 26 inch sizes.
The trailpimp is about as heavy as rims come. The KH is probably the lightest. I obviously like the DHX the best, although it is not as light as a DX-32.
I’ve got one of these rims on my MUni and I was about to post the same thing, but I did a little Googling first… I discovered that a lot of MTBers aren’t so happy with these rims, saying they developed flat spots quite easily, and outright break (although that’s after jumping 20-30 feet) rather than bend.
This hasn’t been my experience. I’ve subjected my Doublewide to loads of torture, on pavement and offroad, with regular 2-3 foot drops and the rim stays true. I’ve even broken a UDC hub with my DW! The rim is gi-normous and allows you to run your tires with super-low pressure, without risking a pinch-flat. I’ve folded the tire over several times on large drops and was able to ride for miles thereafter with no problems. This rim is beefier than a 16-oz steak!
The only potential pitfall with the DW is that the sides of the rim aren’t ground, nor are they incredibly smooth. This means you won’t be able to put Maguras (or other hydraulic brakes) on your MUni without a visit to the machine shop. If you don’t care about brakes, then it’s a non-issue!
