That’s right, DEVO is currently on tour in the U.S. I just purchased my tickets for their show in Atlantic City next week. As weird as they are and as weird as unicyclists tend to be, I can’t be the only one who loves DEVO. They were my first concert back in 96 with The Ramones and Rancid in Phoenix, so those three bands have completely shaped my musical tastes of today.
I’m also contemplating a DEVO tattoo.
If by some strange coincidence, someone else is going to the Atlantic City show, let me know.
btw, Booji Boy (pronounced Boogie) is a DEVO character reference.
As much as I love DEVO I had to miss their Los Angeles shows beacause I jsut can’t afford 62.50 for a show. I did see them last year though when they played the Run Hit Wonder Tour
DEVO is one of my all time favorites. I saw them back in 1979 during their Duty Now For The Future tour. It was outstanding.
A couple of years ago I taught a class at NYU on the subject of Modern Art and Contemporary Culture, and the general theme of the class was the effect of Punk Rock on visual media, and I showed all the old DEVO videos to my students, most of whom had never heard of DEVO. They loved it.
Sadly, DEVO played this evening in New York, not far where I live. I could not go because of this rotten cast on my arm–and, I have to say, because of the same reason ThisGuyIKnow did not go when they played LA–the price was just toooo expensive…
Still, few things thrill me more than the idea that the spud boys are back–I hope a new CD is in the works…
“Yea Yea Yea Yea,
YeaYeaYeaYeaYeaYeaYea!!!
Got an urge, got a surge and its out of control now!!!”
I’ve always liked the Duty now for the future logo, which seems to be the most popular devo tat to get. I also like the Total Devo logo with the twp smiley faces, but my wife hates that one for some reason. I might watch my “complete truth about devolution” dvd to get more tat ideas. I was also going to some photoshopping today to see how certain designs would look.
I think that was the year. Are we not men was the only album. We(my gang) loving music… They played in one of our favorite bars. I know I saw the Talking Heads in “77 at the same place and I didn’t know who they were.
I did know the song Psyco killer. I didn’t put to two together until I was at the concert. I kept telling my friend " I think they sing this song Pycho Killer”. I was right. It was a sweet night.
love to see Devo again… times have changed … I look’em up on-line for the concert tour.
I recall seeing a sign on a wall indicating the maximum occupancy of the venue, and thinking that there must have been three times that number in the place that night. We were like sardines.
I was one arm’s length from the stage and the crowd was so tight that if I had lost consciousness I would not have been able to fall to the floor; I’d have been held vertical by the pressure of the bodies.
What fun!
Lost my camera lens cap because it fell to the floor and there was no way to bend down to get it. All my memories of that night are hot, sweaty, and red because of the red lights. And loud.
So yeah, count me as yet another unicyclist who loves DEVO.
Update:
My brother now has plans to take a bus down from Maine to see the show. At 18, I’m wondering if he’ll be the youngest one there…well, the show’s 18+ so…yeah…anyways…
My wife
My brother
and Myself
= 2 1/2 unicyclists going to see DEVO
Myself (1) + my brother (1) + my wife who learned how to unicycle while living in the woods of Peru, Maine where nobody could see her but once we moved to more urban areas she didn’t want to be seen wobbling down the sidewalk so hung up her one wheel for the time being (1/2) = 2 1/2
There’s a great tribute album out there called We’re NOT Devo! and has The Aquabats, Jughead’s Revenge, Voodoo Glowskulls, and others doing their various punk/ska covers of Devo songs. I also have a tribute cd called Mashing Potatoes which is all obscure ska bands doing covers. Very cool. It inspired me to do a ska version of whip it.
The day after their show in atlantic city, they’re playing in Ohio with The English Beat.
Well I don’t have a band anymore since I just arrived in thePhilly area. I want to find someone with a Moog who can play some good synth, someone to play drums, and then I’ll play guitar and sing. It will be NEW new wave with a punk rock energy.
I’ve been really inspired by a band called The Network, which i believe has members of Green Day and Devo in it. They all wear masks and hold goofy press conferences denying such rumors, but you can hear the green day in 'em, and you can hear the DEVO, so who knows.
DEVO was amazing! We had a blast. We were front and center for the whole show, got to shout into the mic during Jocko Homo, caught an energy dome, half of a yellow paper suit shirt, a couple bouncy balls pulled from a bag in Marky’s crotch during Come Back Jonee. Then we met Mark and Bob1 after the show, shook hands and got some autographs. Cameras weren’t allowed inside, but here are some pics of our treasures.
I got my plane tickets to San Diego arriving Oct. 7th.
D-E-V-O is on the 9th. I called the old highschool buddies to have a reunion. We all saw Devo that 1st time they came in 1977 or 78. I haven’t seen Devo since.
The only recorded disc I saw prior to the concert was a 45rpm. “We are Devo” was one song with “Mongoloids” on the flip side.
At the concert Devo had what I call the 1st music videos that I have ever seen. Are we not men and Jonee(It’s funny art).
They wore the yellow chemical protection suits during the concert.
It will make a nice start to the vacation. We will hang in San Diego a few days before heading up to Santa Barbara for the MUni Fest!!!
