Dartmoor muni weekend 27th-28th May 2006

Looking at the list of people going, I think there are seven or eight people coming who I know are very fast, I’d guess everyone going will get found out at some point on the weekend!

Joe

We’re wanted for a Mazda advert :astonished:
Here’s the email:

I replied and said “why not”. Sounds a strange request, but could be fun, and give muni some exposure

Rob

Wow! Thats amazing. Great news!

Mike

Mazda advert filming

The Mazda people want to film on Friday afternoon if possible, which sounds a good idea because there will be a lot of faffing about involved and it would have eaten into our ride time on the main ride days.

So, I have told them I will try to get as many people as possible together who don’t mind being filmed.

If you’re up for it and can get to Princetown for Friday lunchtime please let me know ASAP so I can get back to them.

I realise a lot of you are at BUC this weekend, so I’ll probably bump the thread later.

Rob

Bump for people who were at BUC…

Please see the post above about filming.

Tried out that new route with stepping stones yesterday with Tue and Helen (my wife) on her bike. Bits of it were very good, with some excellent downhills and some very technical rooty stuff, and of course the stepping stones. It was much harder than we expected though, and ended up over 18 miles long… took us five hours in total, with lots of really energy-sapping boring riding on rough grass. But it has potential - we’ll cut it down and just use the good bits and it should be a good ride (although still quite hard). If it’s not too wet I’ll use that as the main Sunday ride.

Tue suffered the curse of the KH rim again and had his second rim split, having to walk three miles or so back to where we parked (he had his 29er in the car, so rode back out to meet us near the finish) - hopefully he can get it sorted out before the meeting.

Rob

It’s occurred to us here in Nottingham (John H and I) that we haven’t worked out how we’re getting to this one at all. We’re both students so pretty flexible as to when to go down and come back.

Anyone fancy giving us a lift from somewhere? We’re starting off from Nottingham, but can get to anywhere vaguely on the way that has a train service. We don’t mind chipping in for petrol, so you could save yourself money and make your journey more environmentally friendly all in one fell swoop!

By the way, is anyone planning to bring a 29er? Would this be a completely stupid place to bring a 29er with a big fat muni tyre on?

Joe

Failing all else, I’d be able to pick a couple of you up from Plymouth station. I’ve managed to get Friday off work (semi-officially… it’s on the holiday list but I’m not entirely sure the boss actually knows yet :o ).

Tue’s just bought a KH29, so he’ll probably bring that. The route(s) I’m intending to use for Saturday would probably be quite good on a 29er (it’s basically one of my commuting routes and I’m very tempted to get one sometime). The route we rode yesterday is very steep and technical, probably not 29er territory. Bring a normal muni as well if you can. The place where the Mazda people want to film us is at the top of the stoniest bit of the route, so you can decide then whether it’s suitable to use the 29er for Saturday’s ride. There are some easier trails as well that are certainly 29er-able (my easy fast commuting route!), probably pretty good for a coker as well. Does that mean you’re thinking about bringing your Schlumpf? :sunglasses:

Rob

definatly coming but worried becasuei only have a 20" is everyone else going to be charging off on 26" munis :frowning: please don’t leave me

We won’t leave anybody behind - or at least we’ll give people a chance to catch up  It looks like we’re going to have quite a large group (20+ I hope) so it’s not going to be super-fast (the bigger the group, the slower they tend to move).
I’m going to have a couple of shorter routes in mind for people who want them, but I think everybody should do the downhill bit down to Burrator reservoir - it’s really good fun and pretty easy to get to. I’m hoping to arrange the possibility of some people being met at the bottom and taken back to Princetown rather than having to ride back (although the return part of the loop is very good, just lots of climbing). That will mean that everybody can do at least some riding together, then we can see who wants to do the longer ride - some people are surprised how well they get on - there was somebody on a 20" at the Quantocks meeting last year who kept up with us very well.

BTW - do you know Barbara (with the minibus)? I don’t really know her and I’m not sure where she’s from, but I’ve got a feeling she may be something to do with the Calstock club… At the last SWUM she mentioned that she might be able to use the minibus for meeting people part-way round rides, but I don’t know how to get hold of her.

Rob

Sorry to be a pain but I need to know how many people we’re likely to have for filming on Friday afternoon. If you can make it and don’t mind being filmed, please let me know - I need to get back to the Mazda people in the next couple of days to confirm arrangements.

Thanks

Rob

I wont be able to make the advert, I am not even sure I can make the weekend anymore. GCSE’s have to com first, sorry.

Mike

Won’t be able to make it I’m afraid; I won’t finish work til 11:30 or worst case 3:00 and that’s in pompey!
Good news though; I have the Tuesday off (the Queen’s birthday!) and Monday is a bank holiday so I can maybe hang around for a bit longer.
If I can I will try and get down for early afternoon but its impossible to say until the day so you’ll have to count me out of the filming :frowning:

Bummer… this isn’t looking good. Is there anybody who can make it? Otherwise I need to arrange a different time, or it’ll be just me :frowning:
(the filming I mean, not the whole meeting!)

Rob

I’d be up for dallying about on Friday afternoon, depending on how early Phil wants to drive down.

Looks like I’ll bring both the 24 and 29. Now, carrying two unicycles is a good way to avoid comments on the train… </sarcasm>

I can confirm that the campsite seem to consider ‘booking’ to be an alien concept:
“Can I book in a tent for…”
“Oh no! you don’t need to book, just come in…”

Sam

I don’t think Phil’s going to be that early… I might try to encourage the film people to wait until later in the afternoon, but they’re worried about “lighting quality” and stuff (bloody arty types  :stuck_out_tongue: )

Yes, they’re a bit odd (in more ways than one). I’ve got them to make a note that I’m expecting 16 or so people for camping and they’ve (half) promised to make sure there’s space, but it’s all a bit vague. I’ll go down there and try to bag some space on Friday morning if I can.

Don’t worry - you’ll be able to walk the climbs as fast as people can ride them anyway, and there are some flat bits between the steep bits to break it up a bit. 150s will be fine - loads of people use them (I’ve got them on my 26").

Rob

Ok, yes I was too excitable. Four sardine-shaped unicyclists should hopefully be arriving in Phil’s car in the evening sometime.

And for me it looks like just being the 29er. 150s or 125s.

But it shall be warm and sunny. It shall. Keep thinking it.

Sam

I’d go with the 150s - there are some longish climbs and rocky stuff.

Rob

Deatils about where and when are now on the web page at
http://www.uk.unicyclist.com/swum9.html

all taken from further up this thread and put in one place to make it easier to find if your lazy.
IF I make it to burrator to meet you for lunch?) I could do a driver shuttle back to princetown for 1 or 2 drivers to collect cars to collect people.

Thanks for that Sarah. It would be a great help to do some ferrying - looks like we might have a few people wanting easier/shorter rides than the rest of us idiots, but it would be shame if they didn’t get to ride the Burrator bit.
Do you know if Barbara (?) with the minibus is planning on coming - or how to get in touch with her? She sort of hinted at the SWUM meeting that she’d be up for picking people up if she was there.

Is Paul coming down for a ride? Tell him to bring some knee pads this time

Rob

And enough nice weather for the whole weekend, not just the Saturday!
