I would say if you get the angle right this is not an issue. The definitive angle can be tweaked using different stems: shorter, longer, more or less angled, reversed,… There are plenty of different possible combinations that would make such a frame OK-ish for most people. Of course, people who have a specific design in mind would have to buy a custom frame from a frame builder, but that would cover most of the basic needs.

Then why not make a W-frame? It might be a little difficult to mount, but a side mount would work and it fixes the weight problem. It would be great for uni packing.

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working on an idea where I take different unicycle parts — like frames, wheels, hubs, and cranks — and build them into a full custom unicycle designed for a specific purpose (distance, muni, or freestyle).

I also want to go beyond the mechanics by repainting frames and sewing new seat covers to give each build a unique look and style. My plan is for each model to have its own name and identity, so they feel more like “one-off” creations than just stock unis.

Has anyone here tried painting frames or making custom seat covers? I’d love to hear about your experiences, especially tips for durability (paint that doesn’t chip easily, fabrics that hold up to riding, etc.).

Lately I’ve been working on a project where I take different unicycle parts — frames, wheels, seats, cranks — and build full custom unis designed for specific purposes. For example, I’m putting together a 36er meant purely for distance rides, and a smaller 20” freestyle uni with a painted frame and handmade seat cover. The fun for me is in combining bits from different brands and making something that feels unique.

I’m wondering if anyone else here has experimented with this? Do you find it works better to keep most parts from the same brand, or do mixed builds actually ride smoother? I’m also curious if anyone else gives their custom unis a “model name” — feels more fun to me than just calling it “my 24” muni.”

Most of my unis have at least one part swapped out on them. Different length cranks, some new pinned pedals if it didn’t already have a set, maybe an aluminum seat post if it previously had a steel one, stuff like that :slightly_smiling_face:

I would highly recommend learning to build wheels if you haven’t already done so. The wheel for me is the “centerpiece” of the unicycle, so on my more involved projects I like building up a nice wheel. For example, on my first project uni (A CyclePro 20”) I disassembled the wheel so I could do a good job at removing the rust, then when I put the wheel back together I used purple spoke nipples which gave it a nice personalized look. I did something similar when I built a freewheeling 650b wheel, but this time I did alternating purple and yellow spoke nipples. You can do a lot of customization with wheel build if you so choose, spoke nipple colors are just scratching the surface.

I played a bit with with frame shapes, too, this afternoon but guess what; I couldn‘t come up with something convincing yet. My focus was - unsurprisingly - on looks, by the way.

Well, as people mentioned before, there is a weight problem with V-frames. So I thought a W-frame would fix that.
But what you quoted wasn’t what I meant. In the screenshot my post said 2m ago, and the post below it said 10h.
