Cross-lacing, Revolutionary idea or just a gimmick?

Wait… what? The cross-lacing that saskatchewanian is talking about is lacing the spokes from the right side of the hub to the left side of the rim, and vice versa. Unless the rim is designed for this, there will be a serious bend in the spoke at the rim.

It sounds like a decent idea to improve the lateral stability of larger wheels, but completely unnecessary for 20 or 24 inch wheels.

I can see how that would be, imagine spoke lights on a coker at high speed on the crossed parts of the spokes. Wouldnt that look neat?
