As a cyclist myself (what forum is this?), I’m quite capable of recognizing a reasonable alternative, even when piloting the smelly metal box.
In the aforementioned cases, there are generally at least two available of: cycle lane, ridiculously wide shoulder, empty sidewalk.
The fact that you would identify the sidewalk as a reasonable place to bike makes me question your ability to recognize reasonable alternatives. And frankly, I just don’t believe you that a lone cyclist would ride in the middle of a lane of car traffic when there’s a rideable shoulder or bike lane on the road. (Just because there’s a shoulder doesn’t mean it’s rideable).
And the fact that you dismiss it sight unseen makes me question yours.
Fortunately, reality is not limited by the bounds of your belief.
