Creaking Spokes

I have just built up a KH 26" wheel with a moment hub, the spoke tension seems fairly tight, but i get a irratating creek (spoke) when climbing hills. Could my spoke tension not be enough? Any thoughts or suggestions are welcomed.

Climbing stresses everything. Could it be pedal bearings or hub bearings?

Also, please post unicycling related topics in RSU where they will receive the proper attention.

Depending on whether you moment hub is from the current batch or old, it could be the hub. I had the same problem and thought it must be the spokes, or the saddle, cranks, etc. After ruling all that out, it indeed turned out to be a defective moment hub! Apparently, and according to Josh at UDC, the earlier batches of hubs were “dry fitted” with no internal lubing. This is what led to the creaking, they assumed.

As you probably know, the moment hubs are not welded, but press fit with a micro-spline system. Anyway, it was replaced and my wheel was rebuild by Josh at UDC and the creaking was totally gone. Had the same problem on my kh 36er, and rebuilt as well and creaking disappeared.

But…it’s now been about 3 months and the creaking is starting to return (on my 29er only) when the wheel is stressed during climbing. I hope it’s not the hub again, because the spokes are still well tensioned and everything else seems ok. I run a nimbus hub in my Kh 24 MUni and have never had a single creak and I’ve put thousands of miles in it!

I bought my old Schwinn from a guy who worked at a bike shop. He had recently rebuilt the wheel with new spokes. He said they would creak for a while, but once they got “set” it would be fine. After riding it for a while, they no longer make any noises.

Thanks, im thinking hub, as the spoke tension is good and it only happens under load, but not all the time. The hub i beleive is from an early batch.

Is there any history on the moment hub failing as a result? If not i can live with the creak for now.

And here I thought I was going mad … I have the same problem, also KH26 with a hub about 10 months-ish old. Wheel has been rebuilt by our local Uni supplier, OddWheel Unicycles, and spoke tension is spot on but it still creaks. The more torque is applied the more the creak.

I’m waiting to get a set of new spokes and will have the wheel rebuilt to see if that makes any difference. I be interested to hear if there are problems with the hub because then replacing the spokes will not make a difference (although it’s not going to stop me changing the spokes as I want a specific colour spoke), but the creak does get fairly annoying.
