Crazy IM conversation

Ok, so earlier today, I tried to IM my old college roommie. His buddy
name was listed as online, so I IM’ed him. No answer. Five minutes
later, I get a message from a user I don’t know. I accept:

<THEM>: Who are you?
LunaBoy4: the question is, who are you, and why are you messaging me?

End of transmission. Later tonight, around 8 PM, I get this. Read it
all, it’s funny, confusing, and amusing…

<THEM>: who are you, you e-mailed me earlier!!!
LunaBoy4: from what email address?
<THEM>: Lunaboy4
LunaBoy4: that’s not my email address
<THEM>: how do you think I was able to find out you address!
LunaBoy4: who are you and how did you get my screen name?
<THEM>: you e-mailed me today. around 1:00pm,
LunaBoy4: what’s your email address?
<THEM>: I have no idea who you are, so that is why I want to know who
you are. Duh <THEM>
LunaBoy4: well, look, people who do not use AOL don’t have the same
email address as their screen name
LunaBoy4: I do not use AOL
<THEM>: Are you using Voicestream?
LunaBoy4: and I’m sure I didn’t email you at 1:00 PM today. I did not
email anyone. Furthermore, you can’t even tell
me what my email is, so I’m sure you didn’t get an email from me.
LunaBoy4: no, I’m not using voicestream
<THEM>: well, the thing is I received an istant message from my on my
cellphone.
LunaBoy4: do you know <CENSORED>?
<THEM>: No!
<THEM>: Are you military by any chance!!!
LunaBoy4: what makes you ask?
LunaBoy4: look, if you got an instant message from me on your cell
phone, then the carrier must have screwed up and
sent the wrong message, or attached the wrong username.
LunaBoy4: I will contact AOL and ICQ, my ISP, and your and detail the
problem, along with transcriptions of this
chat session, your IP Address, and mine.
<THEM>: if that is true, how did I find out that the address was
LUNABOY4, I mean that isn’t an everyday name
for me!!! I don’t mean to freak you out.
LunaBoy4: They should be able to sort this out. If by chance that there
is any suspect behavior involved, I’m sure they
will deal with it accordingly.
LunaBoy4: Well, where did you get that screen name?
LunaBoy4: was it attached to the instant message?
<THEM>: I’m telling you that is the screen name that popped up on my
cell phone. No it said that I had an instant
message from LUNABOY4 if I would accept!!!
<THEM>: and stupid me, I accepted it.
LunaBoy4: well, I don’t know. The first time I ever saw your screen name
was when you asked “who are you?”
LunaBoy4: so AOL or voicestream must have screwed up and delivered the
wrong message to the wrong person
<THEM>: I am thinking you were looking for my husband or something
<THEM>: Did you mean to send it to someone else
LunaBoy4: the irony is that at 1 PM today, I did try to reach someone on
AIM, and he happens to be a voicestream
representative
LunaBoy4: but I did not attempt to send it to you
LunaBoy4: if you got it, I’m sorry, but the networks have screwed up.
<THEM>: I have the message on my cell phone, and you asked “are you
there buddy”
LunaBoy4: yep, I tried to send that to an old friend
<THEM>: then I sent you back a reply and said who are you?
LunaBoy4: he’s a voicestream user, and he is on my buddy list
<THEM>: And you said NO. the question is who are you, you istant
messaged me!!!
LunaBoy4: I guess the cell phone network screwed up and sent the message
to the wrong person. I’m sorry, but I had
nothing to do with it.
LunaBoy4: I’m just a guy looking for an old college roommate
LunaBoy4: who you claim not to know. So my impression is that there is a
technical failure somewhere, and you got
the wrong message. I apologize
<THEM>: I have never seen your screen name on my e-mail. My husband has
many friends that e-mail him also,
and i thought maybe you were looking for him.
LunaBoy4: well, unless you’re married to a man named <CENSORED>, I’m
sure I don’t know your husband either
<THEM>: And since the idea of you looking for him at 4 in the morning in
Korea, made me wonder who the hell
you were!!!
<THEM>: That explains why I was asking you if you were in the
military!!!
LunaBoy4: nope, I was looking for someone at 1 PM EST in New York City
LunaBoy4: no, I am not in the millitary
<THEM>: I guess it did get screwed up. Sorry too. By the way, where
are you!!!
LunaBoy4: do you have your cellphone now?
LunaBoy4: I’m in Philadelphia, PA, USA
<THEM>: ya, but I am not on it. It uses my minutes up.
<THEM>: That’s strange.
LunaBoy4: I have my friend’s name in my list. I will try to send him a
message, will you let me know if you’re still
getting it? If so, I’m going to contact AOL and VoiceStream
<THEM>: Sure, go ahead and message it, just give me a second to go get
my phone!!!
LunaBoy4: ok
<THEM>: I’m back now go ahead!!! Are you on aol?
LunaBoy4: I sent it
LunaBoy4: no, I’m not on AOL
<THEM>: Hold on my phone beeped, so now I have to wait and connect on my
phone!!!
<THEM>: ya, I got your message. " THIS IS FOR <CENSORED>, IF YOUR
THERE PLEASE ACKNOWLEDGE"
LunaBoy4: ok, I will contact AOL and Voicestream and let them know. I
suggest you do the same. They have a
problem on their network(s) that is causing this…
LunaBoy4: because I did not send that message to <THEM>
<THEM>: So how do I know that. I know that my phone is fine, because I
had one of my friends instant message
me from her computer and i got her message!!!
LunaBoy4: it’s not your phone. It’s the cellphone network or AOL
<THEM>: I know you didn’t send it to <THEM> because if you had it would
have popped up next to this
message!!!
LunaBoy4: ok, so it’s the cell phone network
LunaBoy4: I can’t explain it any further, I don’t know why this is
happening
LunaBoy4: all I know is that I see my friend’s name in my buddy list
(which is nothing like <THEM>), and when I
message him , you get it
<THEM>: you said your friend works for voicestream right? Well, his
account and mine are probably messed
up!!!
LunaBoy4: you’re using voicestream?
LunaBoy4: because he sells voicestream phones, in NYC
<THEM>: I don’t know what to tell you. I called voicestream the other
day to ask them how much it would cost to
use this service because i had accidently signed on, and he told me that
he has no record of me signing on!!!
<THEM>: Yes, I am using Voicestream!!!
LunaBoy4: well, I would contact them again, and let them know about
this. your account is all screwed up, and this is
a serious matter, as privacy is involved. Someone may also be getting
billed for your phone usage, or vice versa.
Please, contact voicestream
<THEM>: I will, No I am getting charged right for my bill, simple
because I pay a flat rate and I hardly ever go over
on my phone!!!
LunaBoy4: I’m sorry about your confusion/frustration, all I can say is
that I had nothing to do with this mess up…?
LunaBoy4: well, I’m going to send AOL and VoiceStream this conversation,
so they can make the best of it…
<THEM>: I am not confused or frustrated. I am a little concerned simply
because of this mess. Be my guest send
them on both of our behalf
LunaBoy4: I will, but please contact them yourself also
<THEM>: Sorry for accusing you of sending this. I was just wondering
who you were because like I said I was
thinking you meant it for my husband and not me.

<THEM>: I am talking to them right now if you want to wait and see what
the outcome is that is fine with me.
LunaBoy4: hey, no problem. These things happen. I can see how you’d be
concerned
LunaBoy4: ok
<THEM>: you seen like a nice and understanding person!
LunaBoy4: thanks
LunaBoy4: I have a lot of patience with people on computers. I work for
a very large software firm
<THEM>: that explains it
LunaBoy4: (by the way, I don’t work for either voicestream or AOL)
<THEM>: are you sending it to a phone number or a screen name!
LunaBoy4: the messages? I’m sending to a screen name
<THEM>: what is the screenname you are sending it too!!!
LunaBoy4: I’d rather not say
LunaBoy4: but it begins with w and ends with n
LunaBoy4: I just don’t want to give out my friend’s screen name, since
you already know his name, where he lives,
and what he does for a living…
<THEM>: If you want this corrected we need the screenname!!!
LunaBoy4: I’ll send them the screen name
LunaBoy4: sorry, I’m very security conscious
<THEM>: I am not a stocker!
LunaBoy4: I’ve already typed up a long-winded email
<THEM>: I leave no where near NYC, and wouldn’t want too
LunaBoy4: it’s not that I think you’re a stalker, it’s that I’m highly
trained in internet security, and the first rule is “don’t
give information to anyone that doesn’t need it”
<THEM>: okay let me get this straight, you want me to correct it yet you
don’t want to help me!!!
<THEM>: hello
LunaBoy4: look, from your perspective, you don’t need to know the screen
name. You only need to report who you
are, all your information, who I am, any info you have on me, and any
events that took place. I will do the same, but
with all information relevant to my.
LunaBoy4: to me…
<THEM>: look, I am not going to play games. The voicestream REp #
012743 wants the number so that she can do
a test on the actually screenname. Thats it. End of story!!!
LunaBoy4: have them contact me
LunaBoy4: you have my screen name
LunaBoy4: I will not give out that information
<THEM>: you said you are not on aol, how are you instant messaging me?
LunaBoy4: I’m using AOL instant messenger, but I am not an AOL internet
user.
LunaBoy4: anyone in the world can use AOL Instant Messenger
<THEM>: we understand that, but the rep needs your email address so she
can email you and find out what the
problem is!!!
LunaBoy4: ok, one second
LunaBoy4: <NEW ALIAS I CREATED>@webcodefocus.com
LunaBoy4: That email address will be operational for 72 hours and all
mail will be sent to me
<THEM>: Do you mind if you tell me your name!!!
LunaBoy4: Mike
LunaBoy4: and yours?
<THEM>: Veronica
LunaBoy4: well, sorry we had to meet under such circumstances, Veronica
<THEM>: no problem, mike
LunaBoy4: what are the voicestream people saying?
<THEM>: I am still talking to the rep hold on
LunaBoy4: ok
<THEM>: do you access to that email address right this minute!!!
<THEM>: do you have access or not!!!
LunaBoy4: yes
<THEM>: She said she is going to e-mail you right now, but she has to
put you on her buddy list first in order to
talk to you
LunaBoy4: I prefer email. I can verify it’s authenticity
LunaBoy4: but you know my screen name…
LunaBoy4: I have received nothing from her yet
LunaBoy4: I’ll be back in 5 minutes
<THEM>: Voicestream is working on it and you should recieve an email
from them shortly. You are really making
it hard and I understand the position you are standing by.
<THEM>: But this is why it is taking FOREVER.
LunaBoy4: well, voicestream has nothing to do with AOL, which is where
the screen name comes into play. If they’re
telling you they need that info, they’re lying. That’s why I’m reluctant
to give it up.
<THEM>: The thing is they want to give it a test call to see if “YOU”
are telling the truth!!!
LunaBoy4: they can’t test it
LunaBoy4: they don’t control AOL’s Instant Messenger network
<THEM>: ya they can, because I am a voicestream customer and it is my
phone!!!
LunaBoy4: it has nothing to do with your phone
LunaBoy4: it has to do with an Instant Messenger networks
LunaBoy4: trust me, I do this stuff for a living. VoiceStream is a
CARRIER. They pick up the message from the
internet and deliver it to cell phones. They have nothing to do with who
it gets delivered to
LunaBoy4: and if they would just email me, it would be a lot faster
<THEM>: If an AOL screenname is registering to a certain mobile number
it will be affecting where the message
will be going too!!!
LunaBoy4: I know that this particular screen name was registered years
before voicesteam came about
LunaBoy4: it was registered at least as far back as '98.
LunaBoy4: I have contacted VoiceStream. They will notify me within 24
hours of any progress. I’ve also notified
AOL. I’m sure it’ll be weeks before I get a response from them. At this
point, there is nothing more for you and I to do.
LunaBoy4: Thanks for your help. I’m sorry for your trouble. Have a good
day.

Mike has a girlfriend! LOL

Jason is working for SpectraMarketing now doing software QA. I hear from
him from time to time still. He’s now married with a (2?) year old
daughter, Amelia. I don’t think he has much in the way of disposable
income, so he’s not online.

that’s right, Jason…he was a funny guy.
