Hi again, Recently, my new muni (with, yes, Lasco cranks) started to make
noises that sound like a “clunk”. At first I thought it was a spoke, but I
realized that I was able to feel a small bump in the left pedal. The only
time that I felt or heard anything was when I was pedaling hard (like
climbing, descending, accelerating, etc.). A recent article about bottom
brackets in Adventure Cyclist by bicycle guru Sheldon Brown has led me to
believe that the culprit for all the trouble is a loose or faulty crank.
So, I tightened up the left crank, but I still hear and feel the clunk. Is
their anything else I should do before I toss the cranks? Please note:
these are Lasco aluminum cranks and I have done a few big drops on them.
Also, I installed them myself (which could cause a few problems :-D).

Thanks! Jeff T. ----__JNP_000_7160.0e35.667d Content-Type: text/html;

Im sure youve czeched this, but even so:

look at your pedals. my left pedal comes loose every 15 or 20 minutes
of hard riding, no matter how i tighten it. This makes it clank. Just
a thought.

(if anyone knows how to fix that, drop me a line, heh heh)

If the crank is damaged badly enough during a drop (due to poor materials,
loose crank nut in the first place, etc.) it will flop even after you
re-tighten the crank nut. You should be able to verify that it’s the crank
by holding the wheel between your legs and pulling hard back and forth on
the end of the crank arm. It will probably wobble a good quarter inch or
so. Time for new cranks if this is the case, but the good thing is the
Lascos are too soft to hurt the axle so if you can put up with that floppy
feeling you can keep riding them. At least until your new ones come in the
mail/paycheck.

Your PEDAL?? Is by any chance your seat on backwards?

Maybe… When my Lascos got bad enough that I could feel 'em flopping
around, they were only good for just a few more minutes of riding before
they got so bad that it was useless riding on 'em.

I went throuigh two sets that way…

Greg

heh heh,

nope, its just the left pedal also, not both. i think i might have damaged
the threads on either the crank or the pedal. but i really have no clue.
