cool uni

thinkin about making a CARBON FIBER UNI

what do you guys think (not that i care)

somebodyā€™s done it, I think. I donā€™t have a link, but you could probably find it with search or google.

go to john fosses site

Dude this belongs in RSU, anything that has to do with uni goes in RSU. as for hte uni, i saw one once Here

Re: cool uni

Go for it. Iā€™ve always wanted to make my own carbon fiber uni, but struggled with how to do the bearing holders. If you make one, please document it so the rest of us can learn.

Roger Davies (unicycle.com UK owner) has made quite a few. An old page about his carbon fiber unis are here: http://home.clara.net/theatre/other/familynfriends/roger/rogers_carbon_fibre_info.htm

There was also a sweet and very light carbon fiber racing uni that was made by a japanese. I think I saw that one at unicon in 1998.

Re: Re: cool uni

That one was a work of art; all monocoque (I donā€™t know how to spell ā€œmono-cockā€).

I have a carbon uni in my garage, yes. Unfortunately it comes from an earlier era of MUni, and does not fit a tire over about 2" or so. In recent years it has been used mostly for the occasional offroad racing event, at which it excels because itā€™s very light!

The Roger Davies design uses carbon tubing and aluminum lugs. Mine also has aluminum pins to keep the tubing from rotating on the lugs. Youā€™d be surprised how much twisting force goes through a unicycle frame when youā€™re cranking up a steep hill!

The Carbon 26" Muni and carbon giraffe are still offered for sale in the uk

I rode one of Rogerā€™s 20" carbon unis at crawley juggling convention a few years ago, unfortunately i hadnā€™t learnt to ride yet so i canā€™t comment as to how much different it felt from a normal uni. I seem to remember seeing a photo of a carbon uni with handle bars and a monofork, quite possibly on a thread on this forum, but i canā€™t find it now, shame becase it looked amazing, i think this was the monocoque design that people are discussing.

Re: Re: cool uni

ithinkim going to do a torker style frame with main cap bearing holders with carbon fiber rim, hub, and seat post at the end it should weigh 5 lbs

i dont know if you guys have seen these but there are actually bamboo bikes with carbon fiber parts that hold all the tubing together. But why ot make a bamboo unicycle?

i figure out how much its going to cost me to build the uni

carbon fiber is $172.00

resin is $ 200.00

Dude, Chris, you dont under ANY circomstances need a carbon uni, and a project like that is to pricey just for fun.

That doesnā€™t seem rightā€¦ how much carbon fiber do you need? By my calculations, that frame will weigh almost 32 pounds. :astonished:

im making the seat post, frame, rim, hub, and cranks

HA! Right chris, rrrright.

I got the chance to use Rogers CF 20" at the kidderminster meet yesterday, it was really strange. So light to pick up & move about, and turns like nothing on earth. You can see why Rogers so quick & agile at unihoc on that thing, its almost telepathically responsive.

Iā€™m not sure how youā€™d get on making the whole thing out of CF, the cranks & hub especially wouldnā€™t really work out because of the varying direction of forces applied. You might be able to get away with frame (excluding crown & bearing holders) and seatpost. Rogers CF Frames have metal bearing holders & crowns, probably for obvious reasons.

Loose.

screwwwww you

I think there was a guy at the East Coast Muni Weekdn who had made a carbon fiberā€¦ I forget his nameā€¦ And if it really was carbon fiberā€¦

Greg Moore made a carbon fiber uni. Details are here and here.
