From the August 2001 National Geographic magazine.
sousaphone + unicycle.
This picture was mentioned both here AND on a tuba bulletin board I
frequent (when the Nat Geo was fresh from the presses), yet no-one scanned
it for the curious…
So I now have…
dude
This coincides with a little something I’ve been working on myself…
minus the nakedness, body paint, horn paint, desert dust…
WOW, and i thought playing the trumpet was gonna be hard on a uni… I
feel a lot better now. Hope that sousa is ceramic not brass

After looking at the photo I am once again reminded of an unhappy state
of affairs.
It is a sad phenomenon that many performers ignore their footwear.
This performer has a great overall look - does not quite match the red
socks and hiking boots though.
I urge all of the entertainers on this list to look at your shoes (the
ones that you perform in). Are they worthy to ba called “costume” or are
they merely a pair of shoes?

Thanks for scanning, ISTR that when it was mentioned in this newsgroup it
was stated to be on page 6/7 of the Nat Geo magazine but it wasn’t when I
checked the real thing and I did not browse through the whole magazine out
of weak interest.

Yep, it was around about there (p. 6-7) (August 2001 edition) Actually,
I’ve just flipped thru the magazine to double-check and there are
surprisingly FEW page numbers. But it was before page 10 (which was ther
first printed corner page number I encountered). I removed the relevant
pages to get them flatter for the scanner.
Actually I must apologize for the quality of the scan (especially around
the feet/wheel) I’m hoping to update it next week when I again get access
to the scanner (which is not mine). This was criticised on the tuba BBS
where I also posted (i.e. the low qual scan, not the activity of
unicycling with a sousaphone in Nevada, naked!!)

I thought, given the dusty desert, (and theme, in the article, of “Land
Care” )that the shoes seemed pretty apt. Wouldn’t fancy shoes get a bit
messed up out there?

But I think Wayne may be missing the point of the whole Burning Man thing,
which is that there are no rules. Everyone is a performer, but everyone is
also a member of the audience.
I am in the Netherlands and I have noticed before that there are
differences between the USA and foreign (European?) editions. I have
browsed at least the first ten pages.
Off-topic: a friend of mine collects Nat Geo magazines. He would like to
subscribe to the genuine USA edition but living in Germany that is not
possible (or so I was told by the Dutch distributor). If anyone knows of a
way he’d be delighted (other than to have someone in the USA subscribe and
then send each copy to Germany - it should be “automatic”). Also, if
anyone has pre-1946 copies for sale, please drop me an e-mail.

Just thought you might like to see a photo with a uni and a sousaphone
that was posted a while back at my Yahoo club from a member in Australia. http://i4.yimg.com/4/a95b7ade/g/611c7d03.jpg with this caption

Interesting photo. Would be nice to see him freemount with all that
clim-bim. BTW it looks as if the drum is beaten by something (a
crankset?) driven by the pedaling motion. Ride faster for an accelerando
in the music.
