I haven’t tried it (I don’t own a PSP), but after some google searches this looks to be a good candidate:

pspvideo9 or Xilisoft PSP Video Converter will do it for you.

Google or torrents might help you.

The video has to be a smaller frame-size to. I got the xilisoft one, converted a recent film to psp mpeg4 format.

It was 700MB 544x320 29fps,

now its 365MB at 320x240 25fps

Just need to get a psp now!

DivX is an MPEG-4 based codec but DivX movies are not MPEG-4 format files. Most DivX encoded movies are AVI format files. AVI format files are not the same as MPEG-4 (MP4) format files. It seems that the PSP needs MP4 format files.

So any tool that you use will need to convert the AVI file to an MP4 file.

That could be where you’re getting confused.
