I just bought a unicycle and have no idea how to ride one. My question to
those who are moderately experience unicyclist is this: are you conscious
of keeping a balance? On my bicycle, I don’t have to “think” to stay
balanced. My mind can wander elsewhere while my body stays balanced with
the bike. I’m just wondering if riding a unicycle is the same thing.

Welcome to the club. I have been riding (learning) since September last
year. Initially I was very aware that I was trying to keeping a balance,
but not how, i.e. it all goes too quickly to e.g. consciously decide
what torque to apply. Now I can ride consistently but still not very
smoothly, i.e. little corrections are taking place all the time. This is
going fully automatic though. It’s even funny to consciously focus on
what’s otherwise happening on the autopilot, all these little twitches of
muscles that do their own thing and apparently serve the purpose.
