Computer problem

I cant see quicktime(the one with the Q) I think I have downloaded the plug in but on web sites I see a lot of Q’s on banners and Images. I am runing Windows XP with Mozilla Firefox. Any help?? :astonished:

The simplest first thing to try is to re-download and re-install Quicktime. You can get a link from apple.com.

There are two ways to get the latest version of QuickTime for Windows.

  1. Install the latest iTunes for Windows which includes QuickTime bundled in.
  2. Find the download link for the latest QuickTime Standalone Player which doesn’t come bundled with iTunes.

Try installing or re-installing the latest version of QuickTime and see if that fixes the problem.

I did that and I still get baners with the Q on it. Like when I go on http://www.purevolume.com/
I get the banner and I cant play songs?

Purevolume uses Flash so make sure you have the latest Flash plugin. There have been some recent updates to the Flash player so you may have an old version. Reinstall the flash plugin to make sure you have the latest version.

Try a right click and download, and see what it does with the file. Just to see if it’s a connection issue or whatever.
Beyond that, I’m not too much help anymore. I’m on a mac nowadays, so my computer troubleshooting experience has been limited entirely to other people’s PC’s.

It didn’t work. I am think of deleating Firefox and re downlaoding it. What do you think?

Edit: Ok so it is either FireFox for or my setings because I can view it on AOL. What do I do

It’s pretty simple, really - FireFox isn’t capable of reading certain types of scripting. I’m not sure exactly what types can’t be read, as that’s where it gets all technical 'n stuff, but I know that there are some sites that I have to dust off IE to view them to the fullest extent.

I’d recommend finding and downloading a FireFox extension called View in Internet Explorer. It basically let’s you add a web site (not just a web page, but all the pages in the collective site) and add them to a special list, so that whenever your FireFox browser is reading the URL, as soon as it spots a site name that is on that list, it will redirect you to an IE screen and IE will do the rest, and hopefull it will show you what you want to see.

Try the site in Internet Explorer first. If it works there, then the problem is how FireFox is communicating with your plugin. If you reinstall the plugin and it still doens’t work, make sure FireFox is updated (version 1.5 just came out). Don’t uninstall unless you’ve tried everything else. Hope that helps.

Sitch to Windows 2000 or even better Linux.

GO back to windows 2000? Why?
How can I fix this problem with out using IE or deleating Forefox arnt there setings I can change?

At this point I think a clean install of Firefox is in order. You might have an extension or a hidden setting that is causing problems.

  • Go to Firefox and get the new 1.5 version

  • Backup your current bookmarks.html file. It should be in your Profiles directory:
    \Documents and Settings<user name>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\

  • Uninstall your current Firefox

  • Delete the entire Firefox settings directory
    \Documents and Settings<user name)\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\

  • Delete the entire Firefox Program Files directory
    \Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

  • Install Firefox

  • Copy your bookmarks.html file back to your profile

See if everything works then start installing your favorite extensions and plugins.

" Backup your current bookmarks.html file. It should be in your Profiles directory:
\Documents and Settings<user name>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles"

How??

Type “Format C:”

just kidding.

Browse to it, select copy from the edit menu. Then browse to your documents folder and select paste from the edit menu. Oh and you may have to go into your options in explorer and not have it hide that folder.

Or better yet, in Firefox, go to the Bookmarks menu and select manage bookmarks. Then from the file menu select export.

I deleated firefox and re downloaded it and it allready has all my favorits

Its still doesnt work!!!

If it still has your favorites and other settings then you didn’t delete the profile directory.

  • Make sure you copy your current bookmarks (or favorites) to a safe place. One way is to go launch the Bookmark Manager (Bookmarks >> Manage Bookmarks…) then go File >> Export to save your bookmarks in a safe place.

  • Close Firefox

  • Delete the profile directory

  • Start Firefox again. Firefox should start up with no saved settings. All of your bookmarks should be gone. Firefox will create a new profile directory for you set at all the defaults.

  • Check to see if Firefox works properly now (hopefully it will). Install Flash and Java and other plugins as necessary.

  • Import your old bookmarks using the Bookmark Manager

Sorry but once agin How?
Thank you JC and Gilby and all others:p

The Application Data directory is a hidden directory and Windows Explorer (the file explorer application) hides hidden files and directories by default. To be able to see that directory you’ll have to go to [Tools >> Folder Options… >> View] and change the setting to “Show hidden files and folders”. But there is an easier way described here: How To Manage Profiles.

  1. Close Firefox completely (select File > Exit from the main menu of Firefox).
  2. Select Start > Run… from the Windows Start menu.
  3. Enter firefox.exe -profilemanager and press OK.

In the Profile Manager dialog click on the Delete Profile… button. That will delete your profile directory. The next time you start Firefox it will create a new default profile for you. Just make sure you have your bookmarks backed up before you do that.
