comprehensive creaking help

my cotterless cranks have started to creak, i have tried tightening them up, but even with my MASSIVE socket wrench, they are not going anywhere. i really wanna ride, but i know that that is not the thing to do…they dont creak all the time, but i dont want to test this out anymore. proper instructions?

TIA

Are you sure it’s the crank arm? I thought my crank arm was creaking but
it turned out to be the pedal.

definitely not the pedal, its a very looong creak as i start to put weight on the crank to freemount. i guess i havent ruled out the possibility of bearings or spokes…is there a different sound for each of these?
definitely not the pedal tho, i have to put a significant amount of weight on before it starts to creak–and it only creaks when i am getting on, not when i am riding

–i wish click and clack(tom and ray) knew unicycles as well as they know cars…

Re: comprehensive creaking help

Make sure you grease the hub spindle before putting on the crank - it may or
may not help the squeak but it’s a good idea anyway.

Spokes can make a creaking sound. The spokes can rub on each other where the cross. Put some grease on each spoke where it crosses other spokes. While you are greasing the spoke crossings check that all the spokes are tight and equally tensioned. A loose spoke could also cause some strange noises.
