complex cases for freedom

freedom is not easy to define! post your examples …
here is one: some countries have declared that their women must be authorized to practice sports with veils all over

the argument is that this is how decency is perceived in the country.
counter-argument: those women are not free to wear anything else
counter-counter-argument: even a man in a national team is not allowed to wear anything than the team costume!
So should international boards allow that?
suggestion: then it should not be a discriminatory measure: if women wear that much then men should wear as much

Men are oppressed today because we can’t UNICON NAKED!!!

Ancient Olympic sportsmen (all men, by the way) ran, wrestled, and fought buck naked. The ancient Greeks had a tradition of doing things nude (they walked around in the buff in the bedroom and at parties called sympsia*, and they exercised without any clothes on) – indeed, the word gymnasium came from the Greek word gymos, which means “naked.”
Why naked? Well, to appreciate and celebrate the male physique, of course, and as a tribute to the gods. Participants regularly anointed themselves with olive oil to enhance their looks … and to keep the skin smooth!

In the sixth century, there was an actually attempt to make athletes wear loincloths, but this proved to be unpopular and soon afterwards nudity regained its status as fashion in athletics.

This is one possible source of Billy’s unreferenced quote. Free from the burden of independent thought, he often cuts and pastes these little bits without giving appropriate credit. The footnote for sympsia, which he also didn’t list from the same article, was “Great trivia for the next time you’re in a boring symposium: the original symposium is a nude drinking party (sympotein is Greek for `to drink together’), complete with courtesans (basically sophisticated prostitutes).”

and while your at UNICON, stop by Harper’s for the nude drinking party – if you dare.:stuck_out_tongue:

I never drink alone, Billy. Your (oh, sorry, that’s you’re isn’t it) always welcome to join.

Who supports Pussy Riot?

I nominate Bill Clinton to go to Moscow to Free Pussy Riot!

Madonna is already on the case.

Imagine having Pussy Riot at the next UNICON!!!

It was a nice step forward to see that a woman competed for Saudi Arabia for the first time.

Also an interesting perspective that the Saudi woman in the judo was told she couldn’t compete in a hijab. She threatened to pull out.

Whose oppressing whom?

There’s no way she could compete in beach volleyball in a hijab. the viewers like the women in those skimpy bikinis, and the sponsors like the profits that come when viewers like it.

On another note, the white owned businesses in South Africa, like the mines, seem to severely underpay the workers. One guy gets $500.00/month for dangerous work. It would take a month’s wages just to buy a mediocre unicycle:(

So the workers went on strike, and the police started killing them :astonished:

That seems like a truly complex case for freedom.
