I am ordering my Coker on tuesday (finally), and i am leaning towards the ribbed tire, because the majority of my riding will be commuting/ transport. I will however be doing an occasional Muni ride. Has anyone With a ribbed tire done some muni? If so, how was it?
I’ve done 36er MUni using every tire except the coker tire that has their name spelled out on the tread! All worked fine offroad, and I’m pretty sure the “coker” tread would do just as well, and for “occasional” MUni, the ribbed design would be perfectly fine; just make sure you run lower psi, as you would with any MUni tire. But my guess is, for the best grip, the nightrider cross-cut design would probably have the edge.
I have a Wheelman TA tire (ribbed) on my 36er and have done a fair amount of off road and XC riding on it.
Basically as long as the trail was dry it was OKish but when you mix in wet grass, mud and especially snow it pretty much sucked.
I took a knife to the tread and turned the ribs into a checkerboard pattern with half the rubber removed and the tire is way better off-road and seems to roll just as good on the tarmac.
I think that the Nimbus Nightrider tire is probably the best tire for your needs but I realize that it is not an option when ordering a unicycle from Coker.
If I had to get one of their tires I think I would go with the ribbed tire and do a bit of modification, or get the classic button tread tire. Their MUni tire just seems like it has way too much rubber and could be lightened a lot if they intend it to be a performance off-road tire.
Thanks saskatchewanian, I will try out the ribbed tire stock, and if it isnt performing how I want it to, I will try your method of cutting it into a checkerboard pattern.
My understanding is that the Coker Ribbed is the same as the Radia TA, which is my favorite 36" tire so far. It’s also great offroad, but it’s very dry here. I’d believe saskatchewanian about wet trail performance. Since most of your riding will be road, I recommend the ribbed tire.
