Coker upgrade

I am going to upgrade my Coker in order to make it more comfortable and faster. I have several questions that I hope some of you may be able to address:

I read in a thread a while back that someone upgraded his or her Coker with a Suzie hub. Did they do it with a stock Suzie hub or was it modified?

I want the Miyata-style saddle with high-capacity seat cover, air pillow, and carbon fiber. According to unicycle source some are available in leather. I think I might give leather a try as I have had good luck with it on bicycle saddles. Has anyone expereinced this saddle with leather? Is there a accessory item available that will allow this saddle to adjust up and down? I read on a previous thread that this adjustment was important for comfort and most of the time overlooked.

I am going with 5-inch cranks. I have read previous threads that advocate that shorter cranks allow faster speeds as long as hills are minimal

Unicycle source is supposedly getting an order of alloy rims. Will this rim be interchangeable with the existing spokes and hub or will it require modifications?

Can anybody recommend pedals?

Your help is appreciated

Dan

Here is a link to the Chris Reeders’ Widened Suzie Hub:

(the Cycle in question has since been sold).

Roger Davies makes both a carbon seat frame and a leather-look cover:

As to variable sadle pitch, the Wilder seat bracket seems to be the answer. You can find it here, coupled with the cover, pillow and carbon base:

If you’r REALY a macho speed demon, then you might also consider ordering 4.5" cranks along with the 5"- after some years of experience, David Stone has moved down to this length, with increased speed as a result (and his first Coker wipe out).

I don’t know about weather the new rim is going to happen, John?

Also, if you REALY want the pimp dady Coker Speed Machine, you gota have bumpers for torque on hills, and styl’n speed-O-meter placement. Check it out:

If you have any money left over after all that, then I can speak well for the these pedals- I have NEVER had a foot slip off with them (except on stairs…and well, I don’t have a handle):

By the way: I’m writing up a schedual of materials for a carbon fiber cycle using the Coker tire. It will be built off a mold, not a form- still, cost may be prohibitive for some, and it may not be viable as a production model- the frame maybe; the wheel, maybe not. What would you shell out for a quality speed machine?

Have fun,

Christopher LeFay

Widened hub

I have Chris’s Coker and I have been quite happy with it. I’m running a Viscount saddle with a handle I made.

I’d be happy to answer any wide hub specifc questions if I can.

:astonished: i would pay double the price for a pimped out cocher,

George, Was this just a handle or a handle/seatpost combination? What I’m
getting at is- is it possible to use one of your handles without removing
the padding?

It’s my Coker that has a Suzue hub. Its a stock Suzue hub, original coker
spokes (you’d have to get them made for you if you wanted some new ones -
this shouldn’t be too hard to get done as they’re straight (non-butted)
spokes, so someone could just cut and thread them for you), original rim.
The hub is a bit wider, but has bigger flanges, so the original spokes
just fitted. You might need to file a bit off.

You’ll need to be pretty good at truing wheels to get that great big wheel
perfectly straight. I did mine with the help of Leo White (or more
accurately Leo did the skilled bits with my help on the bits stupid people
can do) and it has gone a little bit off true after several hundred miles,
but its still a fair bit less than it was before the hub upgrade. I
haven’t broken it yet, but I’m not very heavy so it isn’t being tested
that much.

It did seem to make a big difference to the ride, but I think that was
mainly the new bearings. If anyone has a coker which is a bit old, replace
the bearings, it really does make a difference.

I like my Wellgo dx style pedals and the almost identical imitation
version of them I’ve got on my Muni & Coker.

I’d quite like a pair of outland platforms
http://www.outlandhardware.com/prod2p2.gif for extra grip between the
pins, I think I’ve seen someone riding a Coker with these or something
similar but I’m not sure if they’re worth it.

It is worth mentioning there are actually 2 versions of the cover. Vinyl
and Leather! Check with john for availability currently but I know that
there will be loads soon because I am about to send another batch across
the pond. He is also getting blue and red vinyl covers.
