coker spoker

hey gang,

say, hypothetically, I may buy a used a coker but it has one problem - one
broken spoke. how hard is it to get new spokes? REALLY hard? how much would a
broken spoke affect long distance riding? would it be better to buy a new coker,
or can the used one be salvaged?

thanks, Tammy

Re: coker spoker

If you’re getting a good deal, and the coker’s in good shape otherwise, I’d say
go for it. I’ve ridden unicycles that were missing a spoke or two before without
many problem… but I’m not talking long distance here.

I have no idea how easy it is to find the spoke of the correct size, but if
necessary, it’s not too bad a job to make a spoke. I’d say just taking a trip to
the Home Depot should about do it – find a piece of stainless steel wire of the
same diameter of the other spokes, and just a bit longer. One end will have to
be threaded, and you can use the old nipple (yes, that really is what it’s
called) from the broken spoke (or if you need one, you can probably get a new
one from a bike shop for 5 cents) to screw it into. The other end is what goes
through the hub. A “real” spoke will have something resembling the head of a
nail here to keep it in place. That really isn’t necessary. All you have to do
there is bend the spoke where it comes into the hub, and that should stay in
place just fine.

When it’s all done just make sure the wheel is “true”… I’m personally bad at
doing this, but most bike shops should be able to help you there.

hope that helps, jeff lutkus

Doesn’t it make sense to simply ask David Coker to supply spokes? Surely her has
them or can get them.
