Coker and shoes

Hi,

I rode my Coker to football yesterday wearing astro-turf football boots
(soccer-boots!) They are like normal football boots but with lots of small
studs. My feet didn’t slip an inch on the pedals

Re: Coker and shoes

I just replaced my pedals with spiked pedals. feels real nice. MUCH better than
the standard plastic ones .

Re: Coker and shoes

Anyone thought of trying clipless pedals e.g. shimano SPuD’s, TIME ect.

-or is the thought of being unable to leave the Uni/MUni at short notice liable
to cause tears and excess pain?

anyone else any experiances before I give it a go?

Duncan.

Re: Coker and shoes

Seems to me that Andy Cotter tried clipless pedals a few years ago. Required
lots of body armor. It was in an effort to get up to speed with high RPMs. I
think his sister may have been experimenting too. Resulted in a broken finger
and enough terrifying experiences to declare the experiment a failure despite
being able to achieve high RPMs. Could check the archives. Anyone else familar
with the experience.

I personally crashed a few times learning to use clipless pedals on my bicycle.
At my current skill level it would be unthinkable on a unicycle.

Re: Coker and shoes

I say BAD BAD idea

from my own experience theres a cat-like reaction when you hit a bump, or things
go wrong… instinctively your feet try to get beneath you. to me with the feet
stuck on pedals is a bad bad thing… like a cat with its feet tied,… then throw
it off the roof

As others have recounted the tales of Cotters and the terror that clipless
brings, I’d like to recall Leo’s setup with 1/2 toe clips (the plastic ones
without straps). He swears by them and he’s not broken anything major as far as
I am aware.

Imagine going off the uni at full speed, with your feet stuck to the pedals.
This is what will happen to you, sooner or later, with bad consequences for your
hands, wrists, or nose. Clipless pedals allow sufficient time for a bicyclist to
get his/her feet out of the clips (cliplesses?), but you have to get your feet
of a lot faster on a unicycle, and those kind of pedals have never worked for
anyone I know who has tried them. They all tried and then went back to being
able to remove their feet instantly.

I tried Look pedals a few years ago : 1st ride = brilliant loads of extra
control (no falls) 2nd ride = 1 fall (clipped in) worse than having your laces
wind up round a pedal at speed 3rd ride = yet to happen …

P.S. I think George Peck was experimenting with SPD’s a while ago
