coasting

Umm, hey i’m twelve years old, I can do hops, one foot riding, and some other stuff but I was wondering if anybody has any good tips for learning how to do coasting.

thanks

That’s great.

No offense, but if your best trick if one foot riding, coasting is a looooong way off. First you should learn to wheelwalk, than try to onefoot wheelwalk, then try to glide, and then you can start to learn to coast. Or you could just pedal really fast and take your feet off the pedals, whichever suits you. I warn you though, coasting is extremely difficult, and often takes overa year to learn. I’ve been one foot wheelwalking for over 7 months, and gliding for about six, and my best coast is still only about 10 feet, and as is the case most of the time, it was a fluke. I can gap farther than I can coast, and that’s saying something, since I’m no Ryan Atkins.

Wow, a 10 foot gap?

All the better to start early then! i know people who learned to coast before they could glide. i started learning to coast about a year ago, before i learned to glide, but until a few days ago i couldnt coast more than a few metres. then a couple of days a go i cracked it and my best now is probably 10 or 12 meters.

i do agree that you should learn to glide first tho as it’s about 15 times easier and once youve learned it you can do cool things like glide down hills:D serach the forums for help on gliding if you want to know a out that.

anyways, here’s my tips on coasting,

  1. one foot as smoothly as possibe to begin with, with almost of all of your weight on the seat, and your other foot on the crown. try and be perfectly balanced, adding no power to the wheel via the pedal or taking any away by leaning backwards.

2.put your arms up in front of you at about 45 degrees as this will give you more leverage when twitching your body in the coast.

3.take your other foot off as smoothly as possible when your ready and place it on the crown alongside your other foot. but when you do so try not to increase the wieght on the crown as this will wreck your chances. try to transfer your weight to the seat instead.

  1. lots and lots of practise, this will probably take ages and ages over many months, untill you get a feel for how to controll the coast by bending your body backwars and fowards. to be honest theres no good way of describing it, try and get some videos of people coasting to see what they do.

hope that helps, iain

Well i can coast furter then i can wheel walk and 1ft ww. I can’t glide so like trev said to me “somepeople learn to coast first and then find glidin easy” sorry i got 2 go but i will post some more tips latter i can coast 120 ft thats 5 rev’s on a 20" i worked it out i have it on film as well :stuck_out_tongue:
Ben

You have a math error there. One rev on a 20" in about a 5 foot roll. So, do you mean 120feet (about 24 revs)? or 5revs (about 25 feet)?

Contra case closed.

Mike isn’t this kind of contradictory?

You saying books are stupid but asking and reading isn’t?

I rest my case.

[Judge speaking] The case for the plaintiff has been lost. Contra; books and reading are of the same genera.

Case closed.

how to unicycle books are kind of stupid
i think unicycling “how to” books are kind of stupid because of the simple but true aphorism “practice makes perfect.” I learned how to unicycle without a stupid book. so uh yeah, just wanna hear your guys opinions.

thanks.

Long live unicycling

yeah sorry i ment 25ft i find it easier to coast with my arms in a Y.M.C.A style(Y) but about 10degrees(forward) off vertical. i let my foot come off the peddle when it’s @ the top of the rev… that bout all i can help just go out and keep doing it and doing it until u can do it.
Ben

The basic way to learn to coast is to ride one foot, then take the other foot off the pedal. Use the foot on the fork (the other foot or both of them) as your leverage points to control the wheel to the front and rear.

It helps a lot to learn gliding and wheel walking first.

Beyond that, and this applies to everyone asking for advice on specific stuff, tell us what you’re doing, and what’s going wrong before asking us to “write a book” about how to do it. :stuck_out_tongue:

I meant average coast, which is about 3-4 feet. 10 foot gap I wish! I barely make five:( .

thanks for giving me some tips you guys. and hutwaite, I guess my other furm thingy is a little contradictory. but i’m not saying reading is dumb or books are dumb, I’m just saying that the “how to unicycle” book that i’ve read didnt have enough actual helpfull information to be worth the money. And don’t forget i’m only twelve, whatever I might have to say may be phsycho babble.

I don’t think there’s any “phsycho” about it.

Re: Contra case closed.

You can’t ask a book questions, or get up to date feedback from many authors with different points of view.

On the other hand, you can’t replace the broken table leg with stacked text messages, either.

What’s the difference between coasting and gliding?
Just curious.

David

In gliding you have one foot scuffing the top of the tire to control your speed and balance. See the description of gliding here.

In coasting no part of either foot can touch the tire. You can coast either with both feet up on the crown, or you can coast with one foot on the crown and the other foot hanging free off the the side acting as a counterbalance.

Gliding is a level 8 skill while coating is a level 10 skill. Coasting is more difficult to do.

coasting is when you take both feet off the peddles and you coast. gliding you do down hill with a foot on the tire slowing you slighty which makes it more controlled.

EDIT: AH you beat me!

He said it better anyway
