Hey there,
I was thinking has anyone ever tried to put a bike hub in a uni hubs place then added brake so you could stop? anyone what to help me?

I have a 3 speed pedal - back brake hub that’s just waiting for me to build it into a wheel. that’ll be fun to ride.
If you really want one I’ll build it for you.
Search past threads containing entries from unibiker and Michael Grant. Unibiker is riding a modified 27 speed bike frame with no front wheel. Michael has built a coaster hub unicycle I think.

Re: Coasting Hubs
I did, indeed, build a coasting unicycle. I use the term “build” very
loosely. I used a 10 1/2" coaster brake wheel from a child’s bike in a
mini-giraffe frame that I made. After about a week of trying to learn to
ride it I welded the sprocket to the hub rendering is coasterless. You can
see it in it’s current incarnation at
http://www.unicyclist.com/gallery/Michael_Grant/aai (fourth from the right).
Also, at UNICON 11 there was a rider (Sara?) in the Open-X competition that
demonstrated a similar coasting unicycle. Video is hidden somewhere in the
collection at ftp://ftp.unicyclist.com/Unicon11 (about 1 minute into
026.avi). This unicycle, as I understand it, was built from the front wheel
of a coasting tricycle and required little (if any) modification for use as
a unicycle.

Tom Miller build a custom coasting hub using a clutch bearing, but it
had no brake. Tom and I built a second such hub in 1991 which I used to
learn coasting forward and then backwards and still have today. I’d
coast on this cycle until I fell and if I ran the velocity down to near
zero, I’d just start pedaling a bit and coast a few more meters, etc.
At that time, unicycles didn’t have brakes other than the fixed wheel
crank set itself and I didn’t need one for my purpose of learning to
coast on the freewheeling hub, so I never considered ever adding one.
The rsu archives contain more info on this particular hub (and the
corresponding coasting machine).
It would be interesting to hear of any bicycling or tricycling hubs that
could be readily adapted for a coasting unicycle. Maybe the brake can
be utilized to learn coasting faster? Maybe the brake can be adjusted
so it slows down the coasting machine, but doesn’t lock the wheel?
Good luck to any coasting machine builders out there in uni-land!
Sincerely,
Ken Fuchs <kfuchs@winternet.com>
Re: Coasting Hubs
I made a post one month ago about a yerfdog tricycle whose front fork was
essentially a unicycle frame with a coasting hub and a built in break. If
you removed the fork from the frame and added a seat post and seat then you
would have a coasting unicycle with a break at relatively low cost (around
$70 for the trike + cost of seat). The fork has main cap bearing mounts, by
the way. You can see the tricycle at:
Yerfdog has another “off road” trike with a wheelbarrow tire and a fixed
unicycle hub and axle.
