Clint Eastwood's "Gran Torino".

Just came back from seeing his new film “Gran Torino”. One of the best films I’ve seen in a long time and possibly Eastwood’s greatest performance! Great Movie! I could hear people actually sniffling and crying at the end. I was surprised by a tear running down my own cheek! 5 Stars. (Highest rating)

I went to lunch at Taverna Bistro in downtown Sunnyvale today. One of the best tostadas I’ve had in a long time and possibly their best dish! Great restaurant! I could hear people burping and farting after their meals. I was surprised by a pinto bean running down my own shirt! 5 stars.

I thought that was you, so I snapped a shot. I guess you were still hungry after your 8th tostada! Btw, have you lost weight? :stuck_out_tongue:

I cant wait to see it. I also want to see Watchmen, Wolverine, Bloody Valentine 3-d, The Undead, Taken, and there was a preview when I went saw the Day the Earth Stood Still that showed a monk type guy in his lookout tower/house ontop of a mountain, and then he see a huge wave start to wash over the mountain range. Looked sweet.

Yeah I also want to see a lot of those plus the new Star Trek! The difference, though, between all those and Gran Torino, is the latter has no special effects; the strength of the film comes from great acting, direction and writing. If you strip away the special effects from a lot of big budget films, you don’t have much left. Or another way I’d say it is, special effects should only compliment the film and be there for a reason, not to be the main reason to see the film, or overshadow the storyline or characters. But when I first saw Star Wars in 1977, I was awestruck with the special effects! But the story and characters are what I remember most.

That is true for all great films, even the ones with special effects in them.

I definitely want to see Gran Torino. Day the Earth Stood Still, on the other hand, was totally skippable. Take the special effects out of that one and there’d be almost nothing left. :frowning:

Actually, film critics unanimously agree that the greatest films are great because of the special effects, and that acting or directing contribute negligibly [this message brought to you courtesy of the Organization of Special F/X Creators].

Yeah, I especially loved the use of the giant Godzilla monster, and of course the gratuitous slasher scene in Citizen Kane! Would have been totally forgettable with it!

]Don’t see it here. You got an early showing?

I really liked the 1st one so I doubt I will like the new one.

Yep, absolute classic. I grew up with these films. Another that is seared into memory is this one: There was a remake in 1986, but it paled in comparison to the original, as most remakes do.

Just came back from seeing the new film “Marley and Me”. One of the best films I’ve seen in a long time and possibly a dog’s greatest performance (actually 22 dogs I hear)! Great Movie! I could hear people actually sniffling and crying at the end. I was surprised by a tear running down my own cheek! 5 Stars. (Highest rating, if you’re a dog owner who’s ever had a dog from puppy to the end, and didn’t cry, you’re not a dog lover.)

I need to see GT also.

many so-called dog lovers are not truly dog lovers after all!

Steve,

You are now a scientist.

Scientists have discovered, through using sentimental dog movies, that many so-called dog lovers are not truly dog lovers after all!

Happy New Year!

He left out the part about plagarism. But you are no BillyTheMountain. You didn’t distort his message at all!

We went and saw Gran Torino this weekend. While acknowledging Eastwood’s powerful performance and a great and moving story, I have to say that I was left with a bit of an empty feeling at the end.

There were two problems for me. The first was that Eastwood just seems to be the wrong vehicle for the message of the this movie. And this is not to say that he can’t be more than a tough guy hero I just don’t think he worked in this role.

The other thing that bothered me is that we are presented with a set of characters, Eastwood and his neighbors, whose characters are developed and who undergo change and growth. While at the same time there are peripheral characters like Eastwood’s family who are presented as caricatures and foils to his fully developed character. But I found their presentation as two dimensional people too stark. It added an unreal feeling to the film.

They haven’t done a remake of the ‘‘Forbidden Planet’’ yet. Bring back Robbie the Robot!

Gran Torino is good. But better than Outlaw Jose Wells or Dirty Harry? mmm…

Slum Dog Millionare is very good.

This movie used words for the 1st time that astronauts and other space dudes still use today.

sorry if I stray from thread topic.

Yeah I think either Bobcat Goldthwait or even Gilbert Gottfried would have been better!

Haha, but I think Eastwood was awesome and he should make one more Dirty Harry! :sunglasses:

I saw it the weekend before last and I certainly don’t feel it was robbed by the Academy not getting any nominations.

I’ve seen pretty much every Oscar nominated film this year and I’m rooting for Slumdog Millionaire

If Mickey Rourke doesn’t win best actor, there’s no justice!

Except many voters never actually see the movie and many may not see The Wrestler because they were so put off by the Squeemishness of Aronofsky’s earlier films (or boringness in case of The Fountain) The Wrestler is definitely one of better films of the year.
