Clarke McFarlane (Ping - Old(ish) Timers)

The latest issue of Kaskade (yes, for the umpteenth time a great overall circus arts quarterly magazine out of Germany - http://www.kaskade.de - only $22/year for a US subscription ) has an article on Planet Banana, a juggling/trapeze/performance art duo.

The male half is Clarke McFarlane and the article says he attended the 1984 National Unicycle Meet in Syracuse. He apparently was impressed by Sem Abrahams and John Fox.

Of course, I know of Sem but is there a John Fox? I know of Paul and Charlotte Fox, but is this John Fox of whom the article speaks really John Foss? (Searching Google groups for a John Fox on rec.sport.unicycling yields 0 hits.)

Thanks,

Yes, that would be Foss.
I don’t know if Nationals were also in Syracuse that year, but I attended
Unicon 1 there, and the 3 most impressive people were Sem, Foss and Peter
Rosendahl.

Thanks, David. Yes, checking back it looks like NUM was in Syracuse in 1983, but it was UNICON I that was there in 1984.

There was Paul Fox, but I don’t think there was any John Fox, so it was probably me. Odd he didn’t mention Peter Rosendahl (or Teresa Hemminger), who came in first! But John “Fox” and Debbie Jones did win the Pairs.

The 1984 National Unicycle Meet was in Findlay, Ohio. There, the funniest Pairs performance of all time (IMHO). It was Sem Abrahams and Frank Birdsall, spoofing everything about our conventions, the ID bracelets we were required to wear, and doing several very outrageous things, including Frank being dressed in drag, Sem riding on his shoulders facing the wrong way, and ending their performance standing on the judges table. Anybody have video of that? My old stills don’t do it justice.
