On saturday I woke up late…around 12:45 and decided to go on an adventure. I got dressed grabbed some food, water, boots, and flashlights, and headed out to Old Rag Mountain (sounds funny I know). It was a little over an hour drive and I started hiking at around 3:15. I reached the top of the trail and then had to climb a bunch of icey boulders to get to the peak. I reached the top at about 5…just in time for the sunset. The way down was rather scary because I had to descend icey boulders in the dark, but all in all I only fell once and it was a fun adventure!
I had to look at oldrag3 for a minute to get it right. At first I thought it was sideways. Amazing how rocks can part like that then another rock falls in the crack.
There is special serenity in a hike like this … alone and late in the day … late enough to watch the sunset. It really gives you an appreciation for the visual beauty and the sounds of nature. The sound of wind in the trees… the crunch of the snow … the power of isolation in the wilderness.
