On my KH 29er XC rim, I seem to have a little chip on the braking surface. Maybe in two areas. They are uneven dents with rough edges that must have been from the uni hitting a rock during a bail/UPD/fall. I was experimenting with putting brakes on the 29er and I can definitely hear/feel when the pads go over the chip on the braking surface.
What are my options here? Can I sand the problem area down some? Do I just need to deal with it or is there something I can do to make braking better?
The chips are very small, and I never noticed them before adding the brake (I kind of want one now that I am using a geared 29er off road).
sand paper and then emery cloth should help. that’s where I’d start. remove the rough edges so they don’t chew up your pads. You’ll probably feel the thump as it goes around, but it shouldn’t bother anything beyond your nerves.
check around the damaged areas to see if there are any cracks or hairline fractures coming from the damage. Don’t try to unbend aluminum.
No, you missed your chance there - surely what you meant to say was “no, your rim is completely screwed and you’ll never get the brakes to work properly again without converting to a disc…”
I try not to be that bad. I feel guilty enough milking the disk thread to death, but I try to keep that stuff in there. I feel most would benefit from disks, but that’s another thread!
