Children & unicycling [Was: Unicycling Obsession]

Anytime when the child is ready for it! The child has to be willing to
learn on its own. Once it has got this dedication, you just have to make
sure your not standing in the way.

Our boy asked for a unicycle when he was 6½ years old. As to have someone
to share my obsession with, I made sure that he got a 16" unicycle within
a week.

After half an year, he is now working on level 3 skills and I enjoy unicycling
together with him on extended trails (his legs are still too short, so I can’t
upgrad his machine to a 20").

Cheers, It takes twice the man to ride half the bike.

Exactly. For either adult or child, the person has to really want to do it.
I made a 16" uni available to my son on his 6th birthday, but it wasn’t
until 8 months later that he really even looked at it. He got hooked one
weekend and practiced around the clock. Then it was on and off for a couple
of months, until right before his 7th birthday, he was able to mount and
ride. 2 months later he was riding a 20" to school and going on easy Muni
rides with the guys. 3 years later he’s doing 4+ hour hard rides and riding
stuff I can’t/won’t sometimes. I can’t wait to see how far he goes with it.
Kids are amazing!

If my parents introduced me to unicycling any sooner I probably wouldn’t have had the motivation. I started as a way to drop weight, gain muscle, and have fun. It’s working great, too! I would say it differs from person to person, but you will probably want to teach them to ride a bike first, so they get the basic skills. Then it’s up to the kid.
