Chigins Gets a Uni .. Day 0

Yes indeed!! What I find so addictive about unicycling is the challenge and the sense of achievement when you succeed. Well done Chigins.

Checking air pressure is an important one if you’ve got a long way to walk.

3 days no Uni

Seriously Jonsing to get back on my Uni. Life has been getting in the way of practicing. I’ll update progress after tomorrow night! Hopefully the break will do some good for my sore spos from the saddle.

Yes, life does, doesn’t it? You might be surprised at how well you do despite having had a few days off, or maybe even because of it. It’s funny how that works but often that’s how it goes.

We’ll be looking forward to the update.

Day 6

Checking back through the posts last night was actually Day 6.

I had a flat on my Uni yesterday Morning. I was able to get it fixed after the days chores, which consisted of painting the home office/den.

I practiced at my spot after dinner until the street lights came on. I can feel the balance coming. I cranked off 35 Hc’s 1 time, my longest ride. I was also able to get to 14 a few other times. I’m heading out again this morning.

Have a great day!

Day 7

So yesterday was day 7. I was able to get in 2 practice sessions. I was able to ride over 100’ for one run! Woot! I also had many other medium-ish runs.

I haven’t really started working on free mounting yet. I think I am going to wait until riding is less of an effort and I can control where I am going. Maybe after I can make the turn at the end of my block. I think when I can regularly ride that far free mounting would be important.

I can see why some have said that it feels like flying. On some of the longer runs it seems you find “the spot” where you feel relaxed on the Uni and completely balanced.

I am writing this the next morning and I’m super sore. I actually think I will skip the gym and go into work early.

Knees in. Butt in seat!

Have a great day!

Great reports and excellent progress! It feels really good to bust through those barriers, doesn’t it? That’s a nice long ride for day 7.

No, I don’t see a reason for you to be in a huge hurry either. When I was getting up to 100’ rides (well past day 7 for me!) I was more than happy to walk back to starting point. My legs needed the chance to recover.

And a supported launch lets you start your rides on balance instead of having to make a big correction in the first crank turn, as you will often have to do after a free mount, and especially after a wobbly beginner’s free mount. You don’t need to make it any harder.

There’ll come a time when you feel like giving it a try, finding out how far out of the realm of physical possibility it actually is. The balance skills you’re learning while just riding along will help a lot then.

Keep up the good work!

Great Job so far, 100 feet in a week is pretty good!

Day 8

Tonight’s practice only involved starting off from a pole. I am able to ride from most starts. I actually found myself getting tired prior to dismount, so not actually a UPD.

I need some conditioning before I’m going to be able to ride much further than about 125 to 150Ft. Haha

Sitting on the seat feels right but it is hard to keep my butt in the seat. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks for the advice and compliments LargEddie and Shmoligan (sp?)

So much fun and so addicting I find myself say OK I more try then I am going in.

Good night everyone! :D:p;)

Your doing good Chigins. Just keep pedaling and having fun. It gets easier and funner as you get better and all you have to do to get better is to keep pedaling. Keep it up.

Glenn

Thanks GlennG! It really is fun. Who knew there was this sub culture of Uni riders from all over the world. It’s like a secret society!

But isn’t it a great feeling to reach this point…you have picked things up lightning fast. I’m finding this next stage of building staminar and technique quite an effort but enjoying it none the less. Been unable to ride for almost a week due to travelling (somewhere where I couldn’t ride) so ultra keen to get back to it. I feel like I’m going to have forgotten everything!

Time for photos/video I think
UL

Finally a video

Here is a video of my longest ride! I am still struggling to SIT on the SADDLE!

Looking good! You’ll be moving to turning in no time!

Looking good Chigins. Just keep it up. You will have some good days and some frustrating days. Just keep pedaling. As Terry the Unigeezer says “you gotta train your brain”. Every time you practice your brain is picking up bits of info about riding better smoother and efficiently. It all comes together and what was hard becomes much easier and more fun. And in my case my pants are getting looser:). I’m a beginner too a little over a month now and I have seemed to get it fairly quick like you. At 2 weeks I was getting frustrated because it was so exhausting and I have a cycling background. We’ll my brain just wasn’t trained and I had to pay the dues of pedaling pedaling and more pedaling. Now it’s really coming together for me and it will for you too. . I bet in a few more weeks of pedaling that you will become a smooth rider. If you can get your Muni and ride some easy trails you will have a blast. Your ready for trying off road now even though you probably don’t believe me. Good job Chigins. Keep it up!

Another Longest ride

Practice tonight was awesome. I’m really starting to feel like I’m riding the unicycle (sometimes) instead of flailing about wildly trying to stay upright.

Decided to try to go around the block tonight using the curb to mount. I was successfully able to ride away 1 in about 10 tries, however it was nice to see some different scenery while riding.

The last ride of the night I made it to the end of the block and started to make the turn before UPD.

I will take GlennG’s advice and just keep pedaling. Thanks GlennG!

Shmolagin it seems I am able to turn Left whenever I want but turning right is an issue that typically ends in a UPD!

Super happy tonight! I’m riding better than I would have imagined when I started. The first few days when just sitting on the darn thing seemed impossible.

Way to go, Chigins! New scenery is a good thing.

I have a harder time turning to the right too. I’m having to practice a lot more that way. No idea why it’s any different, it just is. But it’s all just something to do while riding.

Progress, excellent work.

Interesting, I found this too (I’m right handed for reference). I have less problems turning now but I’m not sure I’ve developed any finess. I also seem unable to turn small amounts to avoid obstacles…it’s like the pine cone or hole in the Tarmac has a magnetic pull designed to unseat me.

I love it when you start to go a little further as you start to have time to think about what you’re doing and how you’re doing it

Onwards and upwards fella,
UL

I think favoring one side in turns over the other is common. It would be interesting to see if there was a connection between being right or left handed and which side you favor. Maybe we should set up a poll. I’m right-handed, and turn left easier. I’ve been working on my rights, and do them just about as well, but I think the lefts will feel more “natural” for a while yet.

I’m almost ambidextrous with my right hand better for writing but my left hand better at a lot of other things, but I’m very strongly left footed.
