SO I tired logging on to chat and got a message about opening an applet, but nothing happened. Is that just because I was the only one chatting?
You need a recent version of Sun’s Java installed to run the applet. I think you need at least version 1.4.something of Java installed. You can download it from Java.com. That will get you version 1.4.something of Java. There is also a new release of J2SE 5.0 (a.k.a. Java 1.5). You can get it here. Install either 1.4 or 1.5.
Then check to make sure you aren’t blocking some of the sites needed to run the Java applet. If you have sites blocked in your hosts file or restricted in IE you may not be able to get the Chat applet to work. I have the IE-SPYAD block list for IE and it has the side effect of preventing the chat applet from working. To run the chat applet I have to run Firefox and launch the chat applet from there.
So make sure you have a recent version of Sun’s Java installed and then check to make sure that you don’t have something blocking the sites that the chat applet needs to connect to.
Thanks, John. I’ll give that a try.
