Charity, fundraising and so on...

A few friends and I are taking part in the 40hr famine again this year and three of us want to do a little bit of busking to raise money. I don’t know about the US, but here in Australia you have to have a licence to busk. Do you (particularly the Aussies who post here) think they’d let us busk without a licence if it was for charity. I guess we’d have no way to prove that it was. We would be busking by means of music (djembe, congas, guitar). I don’t like the idea of busking by unicycling unless someone was there riding with me (I wouldn’t like all that attension :)).

If you’ve got the time, check out http://www.thehungersite.com . It claims that every time you click on the button on the site they donate 1 cup of food. Apparently they get the money from the adds they put on the site.

Have any of you done any unicycle busking?

Thanks,
Andrew

Re: Charity, fundraising and so on…

Thanks for the link Andrew. For some time I used to visit the hungersite until they went out of business. I didn’t know they resurrected.

No but we’ve done busking with the folk music group, both for charity and for ‘ourselves’. Obvious tip: if it is for charity, it helps if you display a large board telling what you busk for. Smile! And thank donors while playing.

Andrew! I don’t know the Qld laws for Busking but If you get caught here in NSW, it’s a fine. In NSW you must have a licence on with you, otherwise the police will ask you to move on.
Getting a Buskers licence isn’t a problem. Just go to your Local council and ask for one. You might pay a small fee about Say $10 or there about, I Don’t know, but something you could enquire about. Even a trip down to the local Police department might be helpful. Brisbane City Council will be the shot for you Mate but worth a try to give a shot at.
I haven’t got a licence but I will taking one on soon. I’ll found out more from my Local council here in Lake Macquarie. And I’ll let you know on this Thread. Stayed Tune! And as for the 40hr Famine, I’m going to have a shot at this for the very first time in Years.
I’m going to have a shot at playing my guitar on my unicycle now, See how I progress at it. Maybe not.

Thanks for the advice Klaas and David. I think I will head down to the council. For some reason I always thought you had to do an audition or something along those lines. It’s a real releif that you don’t.

Good to hear! Last year Australia raised over $130,000,000.

WAIT ANDREW! NEWS FLASH. :astonished:

I just got off my local council and they tell me it’s only one particular suburb. At Charlestown (Newcastle) you must have a licence there. This is the Funny Spot. You must busk only at Charlestown Mall area and can be obtain at a L.J. Hooker.
Yes it is. L.J. Hooker, a Real Estate Agent to obtain one at a cost of $5. to $10. So sounds like you can busk around without a licence elsewhere. I’ll think I’ll go down to my local Police Station to find out a bit more on busking. Leave it to me and I’ll see. Keep watching your Thread Andrew.

Postscript from my Thread above.

Forgot to put this in while I was replying to you Andrew, here goes.
You don’t need to do Audition for busking. Only Talent Shows like Pot of Gold, an old show for Tommy Halon Jr. Hey Hey It’s Saturday Red Faces or New Faces with Bert Newton. I wish Hey Hey it’s Saturday is still on because I miss that show badly With Daryl Somers, Red Symons, Russell Gilbert, John Blackman, Wilbur Wilde, Dickkie Nee, Plucka Duck. So far Only Talent Shows Require Auditions not Busking. Looks Like you can go down to the street and busk and keep the act clean.

David,

Thanks a lot for doing all that, it was really nice of you. That’s good news too. We’ll have to wait until the holidays to do it though because grade 12 is pretty damn busy at the moment.

Update on Busking.

Andrew. Today I went to my local MP for some advice on Busking.
In NSW there is no fine of doing it of public performance. But you must ask a Business Manager. E.g. A shopping centre, Mall or Plaza or other Business Shop owners for their advice before you commencing it. Shop Owners will advice you to move on if it is noisy or causing a public mischieve otherwise they will call the police to move you off their premises or whatsoever. Don’t do it what I’ve have done today. 4/4/2003. By going to your Local MP for advice, they don’t know anything about Busker/s at all. Only the local Council have the knowledge about buskers. So someone told me you should see your local MP for busking. I did. But they don’t want to know about it. So check with Brisbane City Council first before busking and where possible, Is there a licence available at certain places such as Mall’s, Plaza’s and Shopping Centre’s. Check with local business owner’s first if they allow you to perform outside their shops or where abouts. That’s all I got the info for you Andrew. Let me know how you get on and tell me about it, weather it is success or not. Cheers.

David.

Thanks David, we’re going to try and get out for a bit of busking within the next three weeks, but school’s realyl busy at the moment.

Andrew
