CHALLENGE.. Test Ride ALL your Unicycles!

OK, we all know that the optimum number of unicycles to own is N+1 where N is the current number you have. If you’ve been riding for some years, you may have a few unicycles in the back of the garage or underneath the house that have not been ridden for a very long time.

So here is a challenge for most of us: drag out ALL those unicycles, dust them off, pump up the tire and go for a test ride on each of them, report back so we can see what we can learn about these discards in relation to your current unicycle of choice.

So, I will start on my own N=6, remaining from a riding history covering 47 years, starting at age 30.

  1. Nimbus Oracle, 27.5 * 2.80 with 150 cranks.
This is the “comparison unicycle” - what I ride on and off road, it has a KH FreeRide saddle, and I recently changed the tire from 3.25 to 2.80 which I prefer. I love it.

  2. Schlumpf hub 26 * 3.00 with 150 cranks.
With KH FreeRide saddle, handlebar, and made from a frame from a 32 (because of the 125mm hub) but with a 26 wheel.
It feels fairly normal to ride in low gear (but noticeably heavy). A static free mount in high gear was still doable, and it certainly has some speed, although I didn’t find it was relaxing. Strangely, after going back to low (1:1) gear, I was really weirdly awkward on the pedaling, as my brain had adapted to high gear. It was a fun project a couple of years ago to build this unicycle, but a waste of money as I prefer riding the 27.5.

  3. Nimbus Muni 24 * 3.00 with 150 cranks.
Still nice to ride, the standard seat is surprisingly good. It could be slightly better on muni stuff than the 27.5, but I still prefer that larger wheel and sometimes find it nice to have a brake (which this 24 does not have).

  4. Trials 20 * 2.50 with 125 cranks.
Oh, why did I buy this? - uncomfortable hard seat, pedals with shoe gouging spikes. Certainly, no good for anything much except hopping about. It takes a while to get used to a small wheel again (e.g. mounting) and the 125 cranks seemed strangely too long for the wheel.

  5. Nimbus club 24 * 1.95 with 125 cranks.
I guess it is good for competing with a “standard” unicycle, but not good for general riding. The seat is really hard and ideally the tire would be bigger and softer for comfort.

  6. Unknown brand 22 * 1.75 with 165 cranks.
This was based on my first ever unicycle, but I replaced the original 20 wheel with a 22 and it seemed OK back in the day, but not now. The original seat didn’t have proper bumpers like all modern seats and was uncomfortable and soon got sharp metal edges exposed from falls, so I had replaced the seat with a better seat (home made from wood) with a light layer of foam and a layer of vinyl to cover it. It wasn’t that bad to ride, but the seat covering had hardened over the decades and was uncomfortable. It really should go to the dumpster.

So that is it from me. I am slightly wistful about the 32 that was sacrificed for the Schlumpf, and rather glad that I didn’t have to test ride a homemade giraffe that I made decades ago from a bicycle by cutting, welding and adding a different drive sprocket - I’m sure I would have had trouble free mounting and would have found the bicycle seat weird to sit on.

Please accept the challenge and let us learn from YOUR stable / history / mistakes.

This sounds like a fun challenge. I’ve always wanted to get a group picture of all of mine and there have been a few I’ve kinda had the itch to take out again. I won’t be able to do this for at least a month though. My N≈20 and half of them need work to really be rideable.
I’m curious to see your 22” with the homemade seat.

REALLY!!??? why did you have to start this thread. I have about 15 unicycles (picture in Pictures of your Ride)

I know I can ride them all. The first one (OnlyOne 20") is what I learned on in 2015. I naturally can still ride it. The ones I ride the least are the 36" and Hatchet, because the 36 I find difficult to mount and the Hatchet is too heavy and cumbersome.
Now I’m training for the Dutch Championships on the 24" QuAx, and only occasionally ride something else, like the 32" last week.

Aside from that since my holiday to Thailand I’ve put in quite some kilometres with my Electric Unicycle Kingsong S16 Pro, which isn’t allowed on the open road in NL.

I’ve also been wondering if I should take the 36" UW out for a spin and I already know where I will do this.
The only wheels I’ve not been able to ride are the 20" BC Wheel and 20" UW.

sounds like you need to get started then!

N~20 is truly amazing, maybe you should get out half a dozen “interesting” ones to test!
Regarding the 22 wheel, it is not very interesting but this link should show you..

This post reminded me to put this together…

Unfortunately, although my N(Total)=13, my N(Available)=2 right now since I’m at university  Alas, I can probably write down the 2 I’ve got now and do the other 11 when I go back home to visit within the next month or two

EDIT: Photo is compressed so here's the unicycles from left to right
  • No-name Amazon Special 16"
  • Torker TX 5’ Giraffe
  • CyclePro 20" (Just imagine it’s there )
  • Nimbus Freestyle(?) 20"
  • Mystery Suspension Uni 19"
  • Sun XL 20x4"
  • 24" Weinmann wheel (Swap with Club 26")
  • Huni Rex 26"
  • Club 26"
  • 27.5" Light Bicycle Muni wheel (Swap with Hatchet 26")
  • Nimbus Hatchet 26"
  • Nimbus Oracle 29"

Currently N=5.

Impact athmos 19", just changed from the standard 138mm cranks to 127mm.

Nimbus Oracle 24, currently using a hookworm 2.5 tyre and 110mm cranks.

Nimbus Oracle 27.5 with 137mm cranks and a vittoria bomboloni 27.5x3.0 tyre.

Nimbus 29, a parts build with 127mm cranks and an onza canis 2.25" tyre

Nimbus Oracle 36 with 127mm cranks and the nightrider tyre

I have a personal ‘rule’ that I ride at least 3 different unicycles in a week, and don’t use the same uni more than 3 days in a row. The Impact currently gets the least use but I really should try and ride it more, I want to practice more ‘skills’ like hopping, idling, jumps etc. But none sit unloved for more than a week anyway!

Challenge complete!

I only have one uni, I promise to get more later. :grimacing:

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED

Apologies for the wall of text. I’ve done this over 3 days. N=5 with a number 6 in production. Pretty much all my unis were bought as parts so descriptions aren’t as easy as they should be…

32" Road

Specs / Photo

Spirit 117/137 - Dominator 2 / Nightrider Lite - KH36 Frame - Naomi Saddle - T Bar - TRP Spyre Brake.

8k around the city centre

This is my default unicycle. It’s not going to win any races but for commuting, city centres or going on medium distance rides it’s great.

Last ridden Monday (it’s been a busy week). Main reason it sits is if i’m not riding at all.

To Do
  • Replace wired Cateye computer with something that can read the ANT+ sensors on the wheel.
  • Find brackets to attach brake line to Magura mounts and bar that are not zip ties.
  • Next crank removal fit .5mm washers between crank and disc or change disc for 180mm.

29" Muni

Specs / Photo

Boundary 117/137 - Dominator 2 / Hans Dampf - Oracle Frame (D-Brake) - QX11 Saddle - T bar - Shimano Brake.

11k along the Cam

Forgot how squirrely cornering traction/breaking traction can be on tarmac and had some interesting moments. I brush the back of my legs on the frame while riding which isn’t ideal. Really need to take this to Thetford to ride some XC and rebuild muni confidence.

Last ridden May. Main reasons it sits are lack of decent off road riding near me and spending most of my training time this year trying to not embarrass myself at Unicon.

To Do
  • Drop the seatpost 1-2mm as it’s set for basketball shorts rather than regular clothes.
  • Change bar wrapping - wrapping in bike bar tape was “a choice” but looks ugly, damages easily and am getting hand pain during longer rides.
  • Frame has a defect (weld debris in seat tube) so seatpost cannot quite reach comfortable 137mm position. Either replace steel post with alu and cut down or retire frame.
  • Fit ANT+ sensors.

700c Road

Specs / Photo

Old Style Nimbus Disc Hub / QuAx 89s - Mavic Open Pro / Conti Gatorskin 28mm - Nimbus Steel 29" Frame - Flattened Velo Naomi Saddle - T bar.

5k around Midsummer Common a few times

Minimal wheel weight, short cranks - WHEEEEEEEEE. When everything connects, this thing is amazing but it will make you work for it. A 90psi skinny tyre make you feel every bump and can fold if you steer it wrong. Requires absolute focus for best results.

Last ridden July. Main reason it sits is my weight. A 100kg rider and this tyre is not a great combination so I don’t want to ride it over anything rough so it gets left behind rather than being the default for short rides in good weather.

To Do
  • Remove the brake lever and computer mount from the T bar.
  • Change the disc to 180mm so it can share a frame with the 29" Muni. The disc is pointless but this wheel needs a near perfect build or it will blow spokes if you so much as look at it - I’m not dealing with that again unless I have to.
  • Buy another set of pedals - this has currently got the pedals from my 19" on it as it used to be clipless.
  • Re-cover the saddle, the cover is cracked but have some new HOT PINK covers that will hopefully fit.
  • Fit ANT+ sensors.

20" Freestyle/Hockey

Specs / Photo

Nimbus Hub / QuAx 89s - Gusset BD / Garbage Tyre - Nimbus X Frame - Naomi Saddle

15 mins skills practice

This is a great unicycle that doesn’t get enough love. It’s the oldest unicycle I still have and I would not trade any part of it (except the tyre).

Last ridden just after Unicon. Main reasons it sits are that I don’t have a decent space to practice freestyle, i prefer riding somewhere to doing tricks and the nearest hockey is a good distance away.

To Do
  • Replace cheap tyre and tube with something decent.
  • Clean over 10 year old sticker residue off frame with isopropanol.
  • Get replacement cranks - the fitted ones are nearly worn out.

19" Trials

Specs / Photo

Moment 137s - Impact Wheelset - Reagent Frame (25.4 seatpost) - KH Freeride Saddle

15 mins hopping practice

If I have a regret unicycle, this is it. Bought it so I could work on hopping and maybe get into trials/street, then got a new job and somewhere decent to practice was too far away. Don’t want to sell it because I still need to learn to hop and this can also be used as a teaching uni. Forgot how much of a workout hopping is. Noticed that the saddle flexes quite a bit, it’s the only saddle I’m riding without either a grey Impact base or a reinforcement plate.

Last Ridden ??2015??. Main reason it sits is because I’m bad at hopping and can never build up the will to work on it.

To Do
  • Replace tyre and tube - tyre has a nice ring of cracks on the sidewall.
  • Either replace saddle with Naomi or fit a reinforcement plate.

Honourable Mentions

Under Construction

G29 Road - Currently being built but I’m going to need to wait a month or 2 for a replacement set of crank bolts. Using a KH36 frame as if i get on OK with the G29, may want to build up a 32/26 geared wheelset in a few years to share the frame. Still a load of decisions to be made on final fit out.

The Departed
  • Indy 20 with Isis Cranks - my first unicycle. Just plain trash and yet somehow miles better than Indy’s cotterless unicycle shaped object. Frame not straight, what claimed to be a saddle, seatpost not-clamp, hub had a bad interface so wrecked cranks. Rebuilt using the original hub and saddle from my Nimbus Road 29 (other parts live on in my 700c and Muni) and given away.

  • 36" Road - This started life as a Coker V2 (in red, white and blue Ride The Lobster livery with a cheeky airfoil rim that was probably not standard). Over time everything but the rim/tyre was replaced by Nimbus/KH/QuAx. Even had aerobars. Got stolen and never got it back. Still have the Coker frame which, with the brake mounts removed and new bearing housings, would make for an awesome boat anchor frame for a fatty.

  • Original G29 - Basically same as my current 29 muni but with the Schlumpf and 125/150 Spirits. Never really got to grips with mixing the backlash of a Schlumpf and off road tyres / riding which killed my enjoyment of muni at the time. Lack of maintenance on this broke my elbow which was the start of my riding hiatus. Following my 1 into 2 29er habits this was split this year into the Muni 29 and the G29 under construction.

While this is one step in a chain that turned a single Nimbus Road 29 into 3 separate unis, it’s particularly relevant. In hindsight I think there were too many compromises in this build and it should have always been it’s own unicycle. A do everything well unicycle does not exist. I didn’t have / want to spend the money to put the hub where it should have been and paid the price both physically and in lost enjoyment.

I like the format of your post  Might steal it when I make my own!

I’ve been riding both of these unicycles a lot for the past couple weeks now, so I might as well write a bit about them both :slightly_smiling_face:

Club 26" Road Uni

This is serving as my all-season campus commuter, currently running 125mm cranks. I’ve settled on this setup after riding a few different sizes last year. The wheel is big enough to get me some reasonable speed and it rolls nicely over some of the rougher pavement here. I find overall it’s a nice balance between speed and control.

When winter eventually rolls around I’ll throw on the studded tire once more :cowboy_hat_face: Best part about a unicycle: maintenance for a unicycle in the winter is much easier than a bicycle!

Nimbus Oracle 36"

My go-to choice for off-campus rides. Currently (still) my favorite unicycle :slightly_smiling_face: There’s no shortage of rough, uneven pavement in town, but it’s no problem at all for the 36er. Plus being it has a brake it makes riding down some of the big hills here much more comfortable than riding a uni without a brake. Sometimes I ride it around campus as well, though mostly later in the day when there’s less people walking about. I enjoy riding all of my unis (when I have easy access to them), but I particularly enjoy spending time in the saddle of this one
